How much should I do on the exercise bike a day to help lose weight ?
I can't stick to work outs, and can't do the 10,000 a day as have a toddler who hates the pram and obviously can't walk that far so thought I'd get an exercise bike but wondering if it'll help me lose weight and if so how much should I do a day ?

Weight & height would help a little. I’ve always went low carb to star with then added in some exercise. It’s worked so far, I’ve 33lbs off.

Do you mean my weight and height ? I'm 5ft 3 amd weigh 12 stone 8 xx

A lot depends on how fit you are generally & when the last time you cycled was?

I'd start at 20mins of cycling see how far you get. You want a reasonable pace where your heart rate is up but you can talk in broken sentences.

Try to do 20mins every other day. The following week do 25mins then keeping upping by 5 or go faster so you go further in a shorter time.

Needtolosetheweight · 18/02/2021 21:24

To be really honest I'm not fit at all

They are very effective clothes horses IME.

I have a treadmill and do about 20-30 minutes. You could do couch to 10k on one. And we are staring to get into the time of second hand after a flurry of good intentions in NY.

@MrsTerryPratchett I don't think I'd get on with one to be honest I did try the running but ached so much after

To be honest it's 80% diet. Get your diet sorted, loads of water, plenty of sleep (easier said than one with little ones I know) then once you've got into a good routine with that start adding exercise! You'll see very little result from just using an exercise bike without a good calorie deficit. My fitness pal is good do a week weighing and logging meals it's eye opening sometimes how many calories you can eat a day without noticing! (I lost 4 1/2 stone 5 years ago and have kept it off) x

In my lifetime of dieting experience, although I am no PT or dietitian, I would say that burning calories through exercise is really tough. Even 10,000 steps a day only burns 200-300 calories ish.
However exercise alongside making sure you eat less calories that you burn will help keep your metabolism from slowing, it’ll tone you up and it’ll help you feel good about yourself.
This means it’s worth finding an exercise that suits your routine but if you want to lose weight then good old fashioned reduced calories (balanced diet, none of this faddy shit) to a sustainable level. There are lots of websites that’ll work out how many calories you should eat to lose 1-2lb a week. For me it’s 1700/ day. This has been the only way I’ve been able to lose 2 stone and keep it off, that’s after many many diets.

Often the problem is going to fast to soon. With Couch to 5K most "complain" it's too easy for the 1st week or 2 but it's about building up to the exercise. If you suddenly start exercising everyday or try & run 5k then you body goes WTF.

Cycling is a bit more forgiving on the body when you're overweight than running which is helpful.

I started cycling a 2-3 times a week in Sept / Oct & had got my 5k time down to 17mins & lost 8lbs in 6 weeks to get down to 13st 12lbs (I'm 5' 4"!) So very overweight. I was trying to eat better but wasn't doing overly well.
Then work went a bit mad I came home shattered & now I'm over 14 stone again Sad

I just got an exercise bike too about a month ago to try and shift some lockdown weight. I could only manage 10 minutes on my first go but am up to 30 now by adding a few minutes a day and am combining it with some kettlebell exercises. Its hard but im starting to enjoy it! I need to sort my diet next. Good luck!
