Is there any point in applying?

I've been hoping to apply for an internal move for a while and the position has come up.

I have no direct experience but it's a position that people in my current role is often move to (in the industry, not specifically my company).

The hiring manager was very nice and said definitely apply and we will interview you but they still want to see others. Which is fair. However, I've heard they have had a lot of very high quality applications.

I don't want to embarrass myself and look stupid / it be awkward if I don't get it and still have to work there. Or make my current boss think I'm not dedicated. I don't want to leave.

My strength is that I know the business and I have good relationships with the main stake holders but other than that, its all new.

Would you even bother carrying on the process?

Nothing to lose by applying and shooting for it. You still have your current job and good reputation. If you get it, huge cudos. If you don't, we'll, there was someone better on the day. And maybe they were including you when they said they have had a lot of high quality applications. Good luck prepare your socks off this takes confidence and preparation.

I think it's fairly normal to apply for internal jobs if they represent a development opportunity- there's no shame or awkwardness if you don't get it. I've just applied for an internal vacancy this week that I don't stand much chance of getting, but I won't be embarrassed if I'm unsuccessful. You don't know if you don't try.

Bandino · 18/02/2021 18:27

I did that recently and didn't get the job, but then another vacancy came up and they offered it to me. Thought I had no chance and that certain people would be laughing at me. But went for it and it paid off. So go for it I would say. Who cares what anyone thinks. You are making your intentions known and maybe someone will help you work towards it if you aren't offered it this time.

Yes, even if you don’t get it. Great to show an interest and you’ll get an understanding of the interview questions. You could also ask to job shadow in the future.
Good luck Smile
