To think I won't be recognised wearing a mask?

4 years ago I worked at a certain shop, I haven't been back there since after a horrible ex colleague made my life a misery.

I want/need to use this shop today but don't want to be recognised. It is essential shopping.

Would you recognise somebody you haven't seen in years if they had a mask on?

AIBU to think they probably won't recognise me in a mask?

YABU I'm afraid. I haven't not recognised anyone in a mask yet...

Maybe go on a sunny day and wear sunglasses and a hat?

WhereDoMyBluebirdsFly · 17/02/2021 11:10

Don't worry about it. Just go in with your head held high and pretend you don't know them. You're a customer, they can't do anything to you. You have the power now.

Fatladyslim · 17/02/2021 11:10

Sunglasses and a mask, not a chance.

FossilisedFanny · 17/02/2021 11:10

Do you know if they still work there? You might be worrying over nothing.

FossilisedFanny · 17/02/2021 11:11

Would I recognise someone in a mask ? Yes probably.

Coulddowithanap · 17/02/2021 11:12

They may not still work there or if they do it might be their day off. Don't let them stop you doing what you want to do.

Sosigsandwich · 17/02/2021 11:13

I'd be highly surprised if you weren't recognisable due to a mask. As others have said just go in, head held high and act like it's any other shop.

Maskdentity · 17/02/2021 11:16

I know for sure she was still there as of December 2019, not certain about now but I assume so as she was a supervisor and her daughter the deputy store manager.

I had to report her to the police at one point such was her intent to harass me.

Would I look a twat wearing sunglasses now? It's 9 degrees here Grin

I'm torn between wearing a hat or just making myself look nice and strolling in with my head held high.

Some might wonder why I'd even bother but I'm done avoiding a place I've always used and need to use now.

Hat (covering hair) and mask and I expect you'll be ok

unmarkedbythat · 17/02/2021 11:22

We all wear masks all the time at work and have done for months and I almost always recognise everyone.

I'd go for the head held high, brazen it out approach I think.

FolkyFoxFace · 17/02/2021 11:22

I've done the whole avoiding a certain place because of a certain person too, OP. In the end I was torn between head held high or hiding. I went for the former and felt great! The person I'd been avoiding was there, but didn't say anything. I know she saw me but nothing was said and I felt so relieved afterwards. I continued going there after that - it's such a small thing in the scheme of things, but proudly reclaiming a space (no matter how insignificant!) feels amazing.

ekidmxcl · 17/02/2021 11:25

Mask and hat as long as you are not recognisable in another way - like very tall/short, distinctive hair poking out, bright purple shoes etc...!

Maskdentity · 17/02/2021 11:27

Stuff it I'm going to go in with my head held high.

I'm really nervous but it'll do me good to face my fears so to speak. I've been inconveniencing myself for a long time going miles out of my way to use other branches (they don't do delivery)

If they aren't expecting to see you, you might not be as recognisable as you think... Gary Barlow was talking on Graham Norton and he said that the best thing about lockdown was the fact he could now go into Asda and not get recognised!

TeeBee · 17/02/2021 11:31

Hang on, you're her client now. Can you go and send her off to find things for you then say 'oh no...not that one...the other one'.

WinterRobin · 17/02/2021 11:31

I think you will be recognised. I was recognised the other day in a mask, hat and glasses. But if it’s a large shop, and busy, maybe you don’t be seen?!

Good luck! You can do it! Flowers

Stroll in with your head held high and you'll feel much better for doing so Grin

Onjnmoeiejducwoapy · 17/02/2021 11:42

This is so not where i thought this was going from the title. I was going to say “oh money please don’t put it online, a little Venetian masks over the eyes won’t make you unrecognisable!”

But in this case I think you’ll be fine, just brazen it out and act like you don’t recognise

Gary Barlow once walked past me, no more than two foot away. I did not recognise him. I was at a take that concert at the time 😂
peak2021 · 17/02/2021 11:47

Could not someone go on your behalf?

Twentynone21 · 17/02/2021 12:10

Make yourself look nice and go in with your head held high. Take the power away from them and make sure they don’t forget to thank you for your custom before you leave. Good luck!

Go you! You will feel 100 times better for facing your fear.
Lunariagal · 17/02/2021 12:25

Add a wooly hat and a visor to the sunglasses and hat. Your own mum won't recognise you Grin

Maskdentity · 17/02/2021 13:38

On my way there now 😁
