I watched the London Olympic Opening Ceremony with my Dd today. She was only a baby at the time and was asking what it was like when we hosted the Olympics. She was glued to the screen. I’d forgotten just how fantastically wonderful the ceremony was. I felt strangely uplifted and positive for the future.

YABU - we will never experience these kinds of huge events again

YANBU - we will definitely experience these events again

I don't quite understand the vote, but you are not unreasonable for enjoying that with your DC. Hard to pick a favourite moment but I love Mr Bean doing chariots of fire - could watch it over and over!

The cost and the tribute to the NHS were an absolute piss take for what was happening then and since. The very thought of it makes me angry.

It feels like a lifetime ago doesnt it? A time when the most negative news in the media was about largely unfounded concerns about security at the Olympics! We went to watch a few events and the whole atmosphere was just brilliant.

The opening ceremony was amazing, my favourite bit was the Industrial Revolution bit, where they brought the rings together above the stadium - oh christ I am losing the plot, I just welled up typing that!

We will have good times again, I am sure of it.

I can't beleive it was only 8/9 years ago that we were all feeling so great about the UK and London. Now post-Brexit, Covid, potential splitting of the union everything seems so crap.

I was so scared before it that there would be a terrorist attack, but relaxed as it started and just loved it.
The whole Olympic period was fabulous. We went to the first day of the athletics- arriving as the park opened and leaving as it shut. Brilliant, brilliant time.
Have you seen the documentary of the rehearsals and the Olympic ceremony from the point of view of the participants? Fascinating.

Louiselady500 · 16/02/2021 17:32

Yes how things have changed in the years since then. You never know what the future holds but we can keep hold of all the good memories for forever.

Thanks Scarby9. That sounds great. I’ll look it up.

Unfortunately I wasn’t lucky enough to go but my husband did. He still talks about it from time to time.

I have very fond memories of the 2012 Olympics, not least because I was heavily pregnant with my first dc.
We got to see a couple of events. Best memory ever was an Olympic host at the stadium whisking me away on a very hot day, to be carted around in the front seat on one of those electric buggy things Grin

justanotherneighinparadise · 16/02/2021 17:47

Do you know I never watched it!! We were on holiday at the time and we were too busy. I’ll have to watch it one day.

justanotherneighinparadise · 16/02/2021 17:48

I was also pregnant. I do remember finding out Whitney Houston had died on the holiday and being really shocked.

cortex10 · 16/02/2021 18:02

I didn't watch it; some time later I bought the DVD for a couple of pounds but still haven't got round to watching that either. One day.

Louiselady500 · 16/02/2021 18:04

It’s definitely worth a watch
