To complain to Sainsbury’s about their Valentine’s balloons?

I was blowing one up when it popped right in my face - forehead and cheeks now extremely painful, red and swollen. I wear glasses, so I don’t know if that had a protective impact, but I could have sustained a corneal abrasion or some eye injury... very scary to think about.

And it was still relatively small when it popped - hardly overinflated. I’ve never had this happen before either.

AIBU to complain about these bastard objects?

Try tissue paper pom-poms next time. Easy to make and more environmentally friendly.

@fastwigglylines

JFC what a bunch of arseholes on this thread, thinking they're so clever while laughing at another's misfortune.

Playground bullies, the lot of them. I've been on MN over a decade and all the posts I've read this morning have been like this, it's definitely getting worse, I think this might be the last straw tbh.

OP of course you should complain. You were injured by a product that should have had safety information that was either missing or not prominently displayed.

Give it a rest. She's blown up a balloon to much and it burst and she's being very very dramatic about it. Talking about lifelong phobias for her child. It's ridiculous.
AmIBeingTwatty · 13/02/2021 10:23

Haha this is brilliant

MissMarpleDarling · 13/02/2021 10:24

Ffs how have you never before now had a balloon pop when you are blowing it up. Maybe you should call the police OP if you are serious. Report how upsetting it must have been for you having a nasty balloon pop.

TartanLassie · 13/02/2021 10:26

Fucking hell OP, you're really getting a pasting here. All fun and games until a kid does the same thing and hurts themselves!

Peer reviewed research has proven this is a "thing". Mnet is nuts sometimes.

OP I do think you should email them and link to the research. Not sure about compensation though!

Sparklingbrook · 13/02/2021 10:26

I did have a balloon burst really near my ear as a teenager, and I had a rattly eardrum for a couple of weeks, but I'm ok now.

lasttimeIplaythetartforUJerry · 13/02/2021 10:29

I'm not sure youl get a satisfactory response from customer service, I dont mean you burst your bubble.

Or even her 🎈

Knotmyname · 13/02/2021 10:32

Customer service will probably respond, was my student job (not for Sainsburys), and complaints like this always ended up shared with everyone for, eh, training purposes.
Easier if it's emailed though, trying to remain serious on the phone was much harder.

IlCommissarioMontalbano · 13/02/2021 10:38

A few years ago a balloon with the light inside exploded as my little boy was blowing it up and hurt his eye. If I remember correctly I think we did take it back to Texco to explain. Would never buy these again and if we ever get these as presents they get binned immediately. So I do know where you're coming from OP.

IlCommissarioMontalbano · 13/02/2021 10:38

Tesco!

Sparklingbrook · 13/02/2021 10:39

I don't like the sound of a balloon with a light inside, the light presumably produces heat which is not good for balloons?

ElizaLaLa · 13/02/2021 10:42

What is wrong with you? Fucks sake.

MaeveDidIt · 13/02/2021 10:46

Makes me wonder how on earth you'd cope with a serious problem.
You must lead a very charmed life.

Soontobe60 · 13/02/2021 10:48

That was a balloon with a battery operated light inside. Was yours, because I’m pretty certain Sainsbury’s would not be stocking the same product after having been sued previously.
Anyway, seeing as it took you 8 minutes from having an under inflated balloon pop in your face to finding the ling and posting on here, I think you can safely say your eyesight is fine.

Soontobe60 · 13/02/2021 10:58

Having trawled the Sainsbury’s site, all the packs of balloons they sell say ‘it is advisable to use a balloon pump to inflate this balloon’ on. Did you read the instructions OP?

Hoppinggreen · 13/02/2021 11:00

You should probably cancel all future birthdays for your daughter just in case

Whatamesssss · 13/02/2021 11:01
Sainsburys even sell balloon pumps.

YABU @Sparklingbrook

How do you expect OP to find it??????

She only just managed to escape the labyrinth that is Sainsburys in Bear Grylls esque style and make it home.

Monsterjam · 13/02/2021 11:08

This thread reminds me of being in A&E many moons ago and watching a couple come on, she has leant over the table in a restaurant and blown a candle out , blew hot wax in mans eyes, was very vocal in the waiting room about how at fault the restaurant and candle makers were.

StrangeLookingParasite · 13/02/2021 11:09
@Sparklingbrook I don't know if there's been a thread about it, but have a Google there's hundreds of articles. A woman in America used spray-on gorilla glue instead of hairspray and she's trying to sue them because of it.
No, she isn't trying to sue them.

JellyfishandShells · 13/02/2021 11:12

@draughtycatflap

Are you sure it was a balloon and not novelty Valentine condoms?
🤣🤣

I think you may be on to something there. If she had them in a death grip in her teeth, she may have damaged the integrity of the balloons and THAT is why it burst. She has no one to blame but herself!
imalmostthere · 13/02/2021 11:20

There are no words

whatonearthhappened · 13/02/2021 11:22

Yes if I was you I would pop along to Sainsbury's and tell them. I imagine they will be bursting to assist
