Anti USA shit stirring

Ok I’m going to sound nuts. However over the last couple of days I’ve seen posts one here, on Facebook groups and elsewhere where posters (always “USA based) are supposed to be offended by something innocuous

I don’t want to mention the one here as would be TAAT but on fb it was someone calling all English people insensitive to calling cigarettes fags, AMA in another group something similar

Is this yet another Push by those who wish to already disharmony - or just standard trolling
Yes I’m wearing my foil hat

I know what you mean - have you seen "Hypernormalisation" (BBC iplayer) it covers this subject - ie. the theatre/distraction in politics/economy.

Ihearab · 12/02/2021 00:34

Oh I’ll have a look.it feels like I’ve really seen it over the past week or to - am sure it’s fake posting made to spread division.

I've met enough Americans to think some of them are really this tone deaf to cultural differences in other countries. There's nothing magical about the USA, it's full of people, just like everywhere else, and they're no better or worse than the rest of us.

Sorry cross post, if you're concerned about fake posters on MN you need to report the posts so MNHQ can take a look not start a trollhunting thread, I didn't realize that's what this was.
Ihearab · 12/02/2021 00:37

@NotFabulousDarling I’m not explaining it well - bits always a “I’m very woke - and I find your use of x offensive”. Literally seen three posts (one here two on Facebook) in the last two days.

OP posts:
Ihearab · 12/02/2021 00:38

It’s not a troll hunting thread. As I said - mainly I’m talking about on Facebook. And I know exactly how to use the report function

There's been threads on here that I've seen where various standard UK language has been denounced as racist/ homophobic etc by a poster who refused to accept it didn't have the same connotations here.

Thug and fag are the ones I remember. Oh and calling a cat sooty.

They're not common though. And I had no reason to think they were trolling.

There are billions of people using the internet, it is more likely more of them are trolling rather than banding together for a conspiracy theory. Also: Why are you putting any credence into what someone posted on Facebook like it's of any importance to anyone?

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 12/02/2021 00:46

It's because Americans think America is the only country. Or at the very least, the Mother Country, where everything they do is right and everyone else is wrong.

I remember a post on here years ago about a woman with a gay American friend who lived in England and was deeply offended every time someone referred to a cigarette as a fag Hmm and she couldn't believe that people didn't support him. The arrogance of coming to a country to live and expecting every citizen to change their colloquialisms because of one person.

Not sure MN needs anyone to come and throw anti-US sentiment around tbh. You only need to whisper the word America on here and within minutes you’ll have a thread full of posters (most of whom seem to have obtained their entire knowledge of the USA from old Judge Judy repeats and a Louis Theroux documentary they saw once) lining up to insist that all 340 million inhabitants of 50 states worship guns, don’t believe poor people deserve healthcare, are entirely incapable of understanding sarcasm and irony as genres of humour (despite having created some of the most genius TV and movie examples of both), and are trying to break through the gates at every UK border to force us to throw baby showers.

NiceGerbil · 12/02/2021 00:55

I think maybe the OP is drawing attention to something that doesn't need attention? At least based on what I've seen on mumsnet.

OP your thread is drawing attention to an issue that is not an issue based on some stuff on Facebook?

Maybe not MN specifically, but you will definitely get people willing to believe that of one of half/ the other half of the population of the US.

I was watching a programme this evening on RTE (Ireland's BBC) about Trump. It was just a straight import from an American outlet.

No wonder they are so fucked and cant find middle ground. Trump is shit enough without cutting his statements off to make it sound worse. Long lingering shots of him ranting with a small dark patch of sweat on his upper lip. A fleeting head shot in front of some buildings which curved to suggest horns.
I'm no fan of Trump but he is not literally Hitler or the Devil. But that was the almost subliminal suggestion.

And no doubt the same is going on the other side.

No wonder the Americans are so divided
