How the fuck do I I have another cold?!

I’ve barely been out, always wear a mask and I’m wfh 9 days out of 10.

I’m getting a cold. That’s the third since New Year.

Yes, it’s just a cold but I get pretty bad colds. I have asthma and hypertension so I can’t take some otc cold remedies so I’m going to just sit around with a po face and be annoyed.

Urgh.

And please - none of the ‘it’s just a sniffle’ comments from those who never get ill - I get bad colds. I always have and I hate it. I carry on working etc and as I’m home I can do so in my PJs and I’ll power through but I still feel shit.

Moan Moan Moan.

I've also had a few completely unaccountable colds over the past year (WFH), including one after Christmas when we had literally seen no one and gone nowhere, except walks in the countryside. It is a mystery!

earsup · 10/02/2021 16:07

That was me when i was teaching...a never ending round of colds and bugs and viruses....so depressing....since retiring a few years ago i only have one or two at the most each year...i tried all the suggestions about extra vits etc....nothing worked...

Flippyferloppy · 10/02/2021 16:13

I had a very sudden one on Monday evening night, which has gone but left me feeling crap. DH got it suddenly yesterday evening. It's weird.

It serves me right for reflecting just last week that DH hadn't been ill this winter, whereas he usually gets multiple colds!

MorganKitten · 10/02/2021 16:15

I’m asthmatic, it’s winter I’m bound to have a constant cold.

Merryoldgoat · 10/02/2021 17:34

Thank you for commiserating.

Hopefully it’ll be a quick one.

Could it be linked to PMS? I always get flu like symptoms during my cycle. Every single month sadly.

Merryoldgoat · 10/02/2021 17:57

Oh how horrible @Lavanderrose Sad

No, I’m about half way through my cycle so it’s not that. I’m making myself feel better by folding fabric which is oddly therapeutic.

OP posts:
niceupthedance · 10/02/2021 18:13

Me too @Lavanderrose I call it ovulation flu...

dontgobaconmyheart · 10/02/2021 18:17

Ouch OP. I'd get a covid test out of sensibility and decency, sorry. Updated symptoms contain much more cold like markers.

As an aside, I feel your pain. I find once I get one it's like breaking the seal and my lacking immune system isn't on the ball after I've been ill once I pick up everything. Colds etc can be really disabling for those with existing chronic health issues. Get well soon Flowers

Merryoldgoat · 10/02/2021 19:17

I think covid is exceptionally unlikely but If I’m worse tomorrow I’ll get one.

OP posts:
FishWithoutABike · 10/02/2021 19:19

I’d get a covid test if I were you. The new variant has more headache and cold symptoms.

Pukkatea · 10/02/2021 19:31

My covid was like a sinus cold! I also missed it for a few days assuming it was menstrual flu. I love coming on here and finding people share what I assumed were strange ailments.

Merryoldgoat · 10/02/2021 19:33

Oh Christ - not another covid test 😩

IfIHaveToTellYouAgain · 10/02/2021 20:30

Are you absolutely certain it’s a cold? My whole life (I’m 35 btw 🤣) I’ve been convinced that I get bad colds which inevitably ended with blocked ears. Turns out all these years it’s been tonsillitis, every time 🤣
Tonsils out, no ‘bad colds’ since (4 years ago!)

strawberriesontheNeva · 10/02/2021 20:33

Bugs are getting stronger as most of us are not in environments to build up immunity to bugs ( work places, nurseries, schools etc

Merryoldgoat · 10/02/2021 20:52

@IfIHaveToTellYouAgain

I had my tonsils removed (as an adult - utterly HIDEOUS) so deffo not that. I also take a daily prophylactic antihistamine so it’s not allergies either.

I’m having a curry to kill it.

Merryoldgoat · 10/02/2021 20:54

@strawberriesontheNeva

I suppose so. I actually work in a school and my first year I was flattened with every bug going and the following few years I barely got sick at all. I’ve been more sick this last year than the last 4 combined.

have you tried that first defence spray? Boots do their own too called dual defence. I've found they've definitely helped mine, used to get colds all the time but now use the spray the moment I feel the slightest bit sniffly/snotty and they never really develop into proper colds. Worth a go?

FlamingGreatGalaahs · 10/02/2021 21:41

Oh god colds are so annoying! Totally feel you op. Get well soon 😘🤧😷

Luckymummytoone · 10/02/2021 21:47

I’m the same OP - I have asthma too so a cold totally knocks me! I thinks it’s to do with weakened immunity - less going out, cleaning everything ++, our immune systems have just weakened. Feel better soon x

ILovemyCatsSoSoMuch · 10/02/2021 21:58

My cold started at 1:31pm today. Yes, exactly. Went for a run, all fine, came home and started sneezing as I was taking my trainers off.

I’ve had one trip to supermarket in last week, took all the proper precautions. Other than that I’ve only been out for walks/exercise. So even if it’s just a cold it horrifies me that I’ve caught it.

If it’s not gone in the morning I’ll get a test.

Hottielottie · 10/02/2021 22:00

I used to suffer badly with colds & sore throats, which triggered swollen glands & ear ache etc, always felt that my colds were quite severe, never just got the odd sniffle, full whack knocked for ten.

2 years ago I started taking kefir. Gut friendly probiotics. Builds up your immune system. Can't remember the last time I had a cold in the last 2 years or so. Lots of research online to state that probiotics greatly assist immune system. Highly recommended from me!

ANP2020 · 10/02/2021 23:35

Three colds since new year, might be worth chatting to your GP and getting bloods checked. Screen for any vitamin deficiency or underlying conditions. Also can be linked with stress? X

mustbebetter · 10/02/2021 23:39

hi OP, I saw tim ferriss (lifestyle type guru bloke) talk about zinc spray for putting in your mouth to help when a cold is coming on. I bought some from amazon, I think you could probably use any brand tbh. Me and my family all got some and it's amazing stuff, whenever we have had the first inklings of a cold coming on we spray a few sprays, a few times a day and it's stopped it dead in its tracks! Very impressed. Am sure any zinc supplement would work. All my family experienced the same!

JingsMahBucket · 10/02/2021 23:56

Whoa. You just blew my mind @Lavanderrose and @niceupthedance. I never realized period flu was a thing. I’m feeling something like that right now.
