Sounds like someone dragging a pole back and forth over a cattle grate. Coming from outside in my cul de sac. No one around and can't pin point exactly where its coming from.

Am I going mad?

Are you near a railway line? We get something that sounds similar when they are doing engineering works. The railway line is a a mile away across open country and the sound really travels.
