The Key to Adulthood

Hi.. Light-hearted question..My DSD is turning 18 in March and I've spotted a cool looking antique bottle opener on eBay that I thought would be a nice birthday present (she likes unusual things). One reason being she can put it in her Uni box when she moves as she will most certainly be drinking; and two, it's a 'traditional' key given to an 18 year old. My DH is arguing that you only give a key to a 21yr old; I had a key given to me on both birthdays..that wasn't odd was it?

The bottle-opener is in the shape of a key I should have said Grin

I don't see why not, sounds like a great idea to me.

Oh those keys are the keys to adulthood? Wondered why I got them!

Love51 · 07/02/2021 22:10

I was told they signified the key to the door.
As in you could come and go as you pleased from age 21.

I forgot my key to the door once aged 12 and it was freezing, as in actual ice puddles. I ended up in a neighbour's porch til they came home. I was really glad I didn't have to wait til aged 21 to be allowed a key!

I bet you were like "err ok, thanks mum & dad for this random key, is there a car to go alongside?" Grin

If lockdown ends in march she might have use for a key... Pretty unnecessary at the moment [masksmile]

My son received one for his 18th so we are wrong then.

Thanks Echobelly! Seeing as I'm the one that usually thinks of the presents, I may just ignore DH.

I clicked on this thread eagerly thinking you had discovered the key to a successful, sophisticated, smooth-sailing adult life and wanted to know what this was Grin
