Not sure this qualifies but my first proper grown up job was with a small outpost. It was very friendly and sociable, we went for a drink at lunch and after work very often.
We bought drinks in rounds, the manager always buying the first very time, sales and software people taking it in turns, lowest paid, the hardware engineers, only occasionally maybe on their birthday or anniversary of joining the company.
It worked out well, except for one engineer, who never.stood.his.round. Ever. Over the years, more and more of us noticed this. We started mentioning it and still he resisted. He had racked up years of free drinking at everyone else's expense until once lunch time, we finally said, ok, that's enough. It happened to be my round and he wheedled one last drink out of me, telling me he was getting married the next day.
He was sent off to a customer site in a company van after lunch, leaving his car in the car park. When he returned it was decorated with a sign saying just married and some shaving foam / lipstick good wishes. He was very late home that day, having had to wash it all off before going home to his girl friend, who had been agitating for a proposal for years.
He sheepishly bought a round the next time we went out. Just the one, it was the only drink anyone had off him ever.
Does that count ?
