Need help getting some sleep... Pillows!

We recently moved home and after the move we replaced all of our ancient pillows with new pillows that promised to be firm and comfortable. They lied!!

I’m mourning my old, flat, hard pillows and not sleeping well, as the new pillows are too darn fluff.

We’ve now got through 5 new pillows and I still can’t find a pillow I like. They all promise to be ‘extra firm’ but they are not. Why is finding a hard, flat pillow so hard?

So AIBU to ask for recommendations for a rock hard, flat pillow so that I can finally get a good nights sleep?

(I realise this is a stupid AIBU, but I’m knackered and sick of wasting money)

I have no words of pillow wisdom, but following as also have been trying to find the perfect firm pillow for side sleeping!

All I know is 100% not feathers, they are way too squishy!

JustAPassingFashion · 05/02/2021 08:56

We love the otty pillows. They're rectangular and can't be plumped. The have a memory foam layer and a gel layer and if you sit on them they barely squash down at all.

@JustAPassingFashion

These Grin
Thank you. They look quite soft? Do you sink in to them at all?

I really want a rock hard block of a pillow.

Hang on, I'll run up and take a photo of my hand pressing it down!!

They do take the weight so will dip a little but they are firm. It's hard to explain 😂 back in a sec with photo

JustAPassingFashion · 05/02/2021 09:02

Pressing quite hard there. The top is maybe quite soft actually butt he whole thing is fairly solid.

I wonder if they do a trial cos I'd hate for you to buy them and be disappointed Confused

Following as have the same issue! The Otty ones look promising but think I’d need two as I like to be higher up

JustAPassingFashion · 05/02/2021 09:05

I sleep on my side and the height from the bed to the top of my otty pillow is more than the highest of my shoulder... does that make sense? Smile
I'm so invested in this because we spent years searching for decent pillows

Shmithecat2 · 05/02/2021 09:06

Shredded memory foam pillows FTW! I bought these a few months ago after admitting my much loved feather pillows were totally knackered. They're fab - you can remove the stuffing to customise them to the preferred level of firmness.

I'm also on ' the quest ' . Have gone through quite a few. I can only tell you the ones we've tried and discounted . The tempur ( very expensive one ) ok at first but after a while needs adjusting in the night to carry on sleeping.
The GX suspension ( about £30 ) so say had something in it for your head and is supposed to be medium firm . No they lie.
Various ones from Dunelm. Still not found one.

Poorpigletsrevenge · 05/02/2021 09:12

@JustAPassingFashion thank you so much for the photo. I’m going to see if any others are suggested that look a it firmer, but if not I’ll give it a go.

I never thought I’d end up the kind of person who has to have a specific pillow! Smile

Poorpigletsrevenge · 05/02/2021 09:16

@TreacleHart I feel your pain.

We’ve tried:

Slumberdown extra firm - they are not
Ergonomic - uncomfortable
Hotel pillow, extra firm - like a massive, soft marshmallow
Amazon choice extra firm - like a soft cloud
Shredded memory foam - they adjust, but end up flat and not firm.

Poorpigletsrevenge · 05/02/2021 09:17

@Shmithecat2 thank you, we tried those ones and once we’d adjusted them to make them flat they stopped being hard.

Tempur firm-the standard one.
I used to sleep on a pillow that was like a brick. I loved it but it got lost in a house move.
I tried structured memory foam pillows and 'firm' ones (lies!!!). Everything was too soft.
I got recommended the Tempur and baulked at the price, but I'd already spent 2x that on other ones.
It took a week or so but its amazing. You're initially very underwhelmed as you sort of sink into the pillow but it actually cradles your head. Amazing for side sleeping.
Worth every penny of the £90!

ginghamstarfish · 05/02/2021 09:23

I've been looking for a good pillow for ages. Tried the solid memory foam which I found a bit too firm, then shredded memory foam - with a free trial period, so nothing to lose. This is better, but had to play around adjusting the quantity of filling as it was far too stuffed full. It's not bad, but has to be shaken and 'plumped up' every day.

RunnerDuck2020 · 05/02/2021 09:29

I would second the Tempur pillows - quite pricey but well worth it!

FTM91 · 05/02/2021 09:35

You can have mine OP! I have the opposite problem and am currently on my 4th 'Promise to be big and fluffy just like the hotel ones'

They should have pillow libraries, like baby sling libraries so you can try before you buy!

Middle123 · 05/02/2021 09:37

We had 2 Tempur pillows free with our mattress. We chose the firm because I didn't want them to go flat, but they are like bricks so I am actually looking for new ones! So I'd recommend Tempur pillows. I still need to replace ours, but can't find anything that's soft & fluffy, but won't go flat within a few weeks.

HappydaysArehere · 05/02/2021 09:37

Another vote for Tempur but for the normal pillow shape not the shaped one.

19lottie82 · 05/02/2021 09:39

IKEA do great firm pillows for about £8, I can’t remember the name of them though, sorry.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/02/2021 09:45

I've got panda pillows. And the mattress topper. They are blues.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/02/2021 09:45

Bliss.

seepingweeping · 05/02/2021 09:47

Get latex pillows. You'll never sleep on another pillow again.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/02/2021 09:48

I bought a tempur cloud pillow. Used it for three nights and hated it. It cost £80, so I put it back in the packaging and returned it to JL.

Huff1epuff · 10/04/2021 12:38

@Poorpigletsrevenge did you end up finding something you're happy with?

I'm also on a never ending search for the perfect pillow!
