To have eaten the sodding meatballs

Pre packaged from Aldi and just need cooking. They were cooked in the oven and I noticed there was like a strange burning smell. Like burning plastic? They were in a casserole type dish so nothing burning on a baking tray. Fast forward to an hour ago and mixed with sauce I reheated and ate them! They tasted chemically. Really odd but because I was starving and couldn't be bothered to make anything else I've kept going. As did my hubby! My throat is mildly sore like something as burnt it. Am I going to regret this soon and what the hell was in them?

Could they have fennel in them? I used to get some Italian inspired ones but they changed the recipe and the fennel was disgusting

Make sure to let us know if you die, OP. Flowers

There's nothing worse than an unresolved thread where the OP leaves us hanging.

Wishing you all the best.

Have you had a test for covid? Changes to taste and smell, sore throat etc. One of my first symptoms was thinking the oven smelt like burning plastic and everything I cooked tasted like that too!

Aldi have had some E. coli / listeria recalls in recent months.

Did some of the plastic film from the packet or one of those pads to absorb blood get in the dish? Could there have been any residue of dishwashing chemicals in the dish? Sometimes water (and dishwasher chemicals) gets trapped inside handles or lids of pans and runs out when you turn them over.

But, as PPs say, changes to smell and taste, and a sore throat could be indicative of COVID-19.

How is your husbands throat, and did he think they tasted weird? If he's ok then I wouldn't worry, but maybe look at Covid as a possibility as others have suggested

Nothing in the dish no. Sore throat has gone. Everything else tastes and smells nornal. Hubby said same as me. Must have been something in the meatballs but I don't know what. Grin
