Google safesearch - surely this isn't right

Quick question - does anyone know why I can override google safeseach every time it comes across a potentially unsuitable website?

I get a page with: You cannot browse this page at xxx because it is restricted.

But below this I can just click on 'allow website', which closes the browser and takes me back to the desktop - if i click on safari I'm taken straight to the potentially dodgy site.

Have two DC, and feel we need to have better parental controls across our devices. Children don't have phones but we have a family iPad and MacBook. Nothing bad happened yet but feel it's only a matter of time.

Because it’s not perfect, sometimes it filters out sites that you need to see. Google covers itself by specifying that it’s for ‘supervised children’

Ok thanks. Thought there might've been a different setting or something. Do porn filters even work?
