Does this look infected?

On Friday, Dustypup's razor sharp fang sliced my thumb. It's bloody sore.

Doesn't feel hotter than other fingers. It's a bit red around the wound. More swollen than Friday. Wound looks like it is opening up rather than closing. I can see the meat inside Sad.

It is however a tiny little wound, even though a bit deep.

No idea when I last had a tetanus shot. Childhood?

Yabu - stop being a baby and get a grip
Yanbu - you should go to minor injuries unit tomorrow

I really cba to go to a medical place and potentially expose myself to covid when it's a tiny thing and they'll roll their eyes and think I'm wasting their time.

Any advice on what I should put on it? I started off with a plaster but have to wash my hands so often it became ridiculous.

Ouch... But we can't give any advice for sure without a picture OP!

Trulyatraditionalman · 01/02/2021 21:53

Sorry, cross posted! I wouldn't personally say that the wound itself looks infected but the swelling around it rings alarm bells. I would take myself to be checked if I were you!

OwlBeThere · 01/02/2021 21:53

I don’t think it’s infected, puncture wounds do hurt though. Keep it clean and I’m sure it will be fine.

CatVsChristmasTree · 01/02/2021 21:54

Dog bites should always be seen by a HCP. They get infected so easily and yes we do usually advise a Tetanus shot if it's been more than 10 years since the last or you've had fewer than 5 in your lifetime.
Minor injuries or GP surgery would be best bet. GP surgery would be low risk of covid exposure since most aren't having many patients in and rooms are cleaned and ventilated.
Haven't seen your photo, but advice stands whatever it looks like. Dog bites are risky.

Floralnomad · 01/02/2021 21:54

If it were mine I’d just slap germolene on it at regular intervals .

Lostinwinter · 01/02/2021 21:56

You need a tetanus shot OP.

BidensWingWoman · 01/02/2021 21:56

For me, that's something I would keep an eye on but not be concerned about at this stage.

If you can get hold of steristrips to hold it closed, that will help the healing process. They tend to wash better than plasters, I find.

BidensWingWoman · 01/02/2021 21:57

Ooh I read it as a razor cut you, I see it was a dog - yeah, deffo get a tetanus shot.

BaggoMcoys · 01/02/2021 21:58

For that, I'd just keep it clean and put antiseptic cream on it. I'd only seek medical attention if it started to get worse or I developed a temperature. It looks painful but it doesn't look infected to me.

I don't think it looks infected but call NHS 111 and ask if they recommend a tetanus shot.

JillsFlapjacks · 01/02/2021 22:27

I don't think it looks infected, but you have my complete sympathy! I cut my finger a cracker on a shard of broken plate recently. I couldn't believe how much it bled and hurt, it looked about as deep as yours. I have a a pic for comparison Grin

I'd just make sure it's clean and put a plaster on it. Watch out for growing redness/pus. You might find it feels a bit numb while it heals.

@JillsFlapjacks oucheeee! That does look painful.

It's the pad of the finger that has all the nerve endings isn't it, so must be why it's so damn sore.

I've got baby gates on every door downstairs for the puppy, and they need a strong thumb press to operate. Both my thumbs have nasty cuts and I have to keep climbing over them. No mean feat when being attacked simultaneously by a growing furry land shark!!

Painful but not infected IMO

I had a shocking leg cut from the jagged edge of a plastic box , looked similar , like I’d been clawed by a wolf

bebarkered · 02/02/2021 02:25

Hi OP. Have you bathed it in hot water and salt x

BeanieB2020 · 02/02/2021 02:38

Tetanus shot. If you don't remember when you last had one, I highly recommend going to get one. The inconvenience of going to get a shot is nowhere near the inconvenience of having tetanus would be. Always a good thing to get one after an animal bite.
