To ask you not to joke about tourettes

Yet another example where someone is joking about tourettes (not on here), though I have seen it a variety of times on here.

Tourettes is not something to joke about. You wouldn’t joke about other disabilities, yet tourettes seems fair game. I wonder if this is because tourettes is strange, that it’s wild and that it’s unusual. I dunno, but it’s not acceptable.

Just because someone swears doesn’t mean they have Tourette’s. And just because someone has Tourette’s doesn’t mean they swear.

I’ve had multiple well meaning comments, saying oh I’m sweary, oh I must have Tourette’s because I swear lots. I just smile awkwardly as I’m not very confident. But I’m getting more confident.

So yeah, ted Cruz the American idiot joked about it, and Seth rogen came to defend. So hopefully that made a few people think. Hopefully this thread will make a few more people think.

I would imagine it can be quite debilitating and I agree, nothing to joke about.

Fairydustrust · 31/01/2021 18:52

Do you have tourettes, op?

iklboo · 31/01/2021 18:54

I agree. It's a disability - not funny to make the boring, stereotyped, trope jokes about it.

DrinkRefilled · 31/01/2021 19:14

I don’t know anyone with Tourette’s yet even I have thought it’s not nice for people to joke about.
Well done for Seth and for yourself to bring this to more people attention.

HermioneWeasley · 31/01/2021 19:15

Agree, it’s an awful, debilitating condition

wombatsandaplant · 31/01/2021 20:52

Fairydustrust yes I do.
