Why can't libraries do click and collect?

The libraries in my area aren't and I don't really understand why.

Have you asked? Our local library only offers click and collect - it's very efficient - although I don't know how people without access to the Internet manage.

Beansprout30 · 29/01/2021 22:12

Great idea I’d say! I don’t use libraries but I can’t see why it couldn’t qork

Beansprout30 · 29/01/2021 22:12

*work

piglet81 · 29/01/2021 22:12

I don’t know either. In my borough a couple of the libraries (not our nearby ones) were doing click and collect for a while but they stopped before this lockdown. It’s been nearly a year now!

MumofSpud · 29/01/2021 22:14

Our local ones are doing C&CSmileSmile

wibblewombat · 29/01/2021 22:15

Ours does, my friend rings them up, as she's not a Web user.

Beketaten · 29/01/2021 22:16

Mine does - you order the books you want online and you get an email when they're ready to collect. Works really well.

Helbelle75 · 29/01/2021 22:16

Ours do click and collect here - Lincolnshire. You can email, phone or reserve books online. It's really efficient. I've even asked them for recommendations and they've been really helpful.

Amanduh · 29/01/2021 22:16

Ours are?!

MrTrellis · 29/01/2021 22:17

What area are you in?

TrashPanda · 29/01/2021 22:17

Our local libraries do, well four of them were until recently, now just the central one as the other staff are being moved to help with covid vaccine stuff. There are two options you can do. List specific books you want and they will let you know when available which could be days or weeks. Or say what sort of books you like, authors you enjoy etc and they will pick a selection for you to collect in 48 hours. Can be done online or by phone.

Piranesio · 29/01/2021 22:17

Mine is. Does during "normal" times too.

Contactless too, you reserve online and then swipe your card on the machine in the library which directs to the pigeon hole number you need and then you come back and scan the book our before you leave. Great system.

Feathersinthehead · 29/01/2021 22:17

Ours have been doing a fantastic job of c&c with a smile. They did it during previous lockdowns.

Amanduh · 29/01/2021 22:17

Oh and that’s Herts and Gloucs I know that are. Yours need to up their game

Feetupteashot · 29/01/2021 22:18

Ours does. They'll pick a selection for you too if you answer a few qs. Returned books go into isolation for few days then back on shelves

Megan2018 · 29/01/2021 22:18

Ours does, it did even before Covid.

FlowEr262 · 29/01/2021 22:19

Ours has been and then stopped mid January, I have 4 books on order that I’m really keen to pick up!

RhinestoneCowgirl · 29/01/2021 22:21

I'm in Bristol, all libraries closed completely at the moment, not open 'until it's safe'. Even in August they only reopened the main central library and 3 branch libraries across the city for click and collect.

I suspect my local library is unlikely to ever reopen, our city council is broke and libraries have been on the cuts list many times.

Winniewonka · 29/01/2021 22:22

Library worker here - we have a click n collect service that was set up to compensate for borrowers not being able to come in and browse. You can order online or by telephone if you haven't got internet access. We'll even choose your books for you if for example you ask for six thrillers in paperback. Also offer ebooks, e audio and e magazines all free of charge.
You can join any library in the country so if your local authority isn't open maybe try one nearby😀

mechanicalwonder · 29/01/2021 22:23

mine is. .you can do online or phone. .its actually brilliant.

Iqqq · 29/01/2021 22:25

Ours do click and collect

Janedownourlane · 29/01/2021 22:33

Maybe check if your library has subscibed to Pressreader. Ours has and there are hundreds of magazines to read, including up to date releases.

jakesmommy · 29/01/2021 22:35

I work for the Library of Birmingham, from August until October the library offered a limited service order and collect service where we allowed people to order books online and pick them up on an alloted time, we also allowed limited browsing and computer usage, from October to December reduced the service to just an order and collect service at the door, we then went into lockdown, we are now preparing to offer a order and post service until March.

EdHelpPls · 29/01/2021 22:37

Can book and collect here in NI even though we can't do click and collect for shops! It's been fab.

Can you access ebooks and audio books online via your library?

SunshineCake · 29/01/2021 22:38

Our library is.
