Sensory room suggestions

Stopsniffing · 27/01/2021 18:33

Hi All... doing up a sensory room for my son who has Down Syndrome... he’s just coming up 8 months. I’ve got an empty space on one wall I would like to fill. Any suggestions please? We already have mirrors, different textures/textiles board, clock, shapes, light projector, mirror ball, lights and a toy box with balls, instruments, magnetic shapes. Thanks

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 27/01/2021 18:38

Do you have a bubble tube? Or fibre optic spaghetti?

reefedsail · 27/01/2021 18:38

Cog board?
Console to choose music?
Bubble tube/ wall?

Stopsniffing · 27/01/2021 18:40

Have a look on www.learningspace.co.uk. If you’re on a low income you could apply for a grant from the Family Fund to help with this.

Definitely get a bubble tube, a dark den/tent/teepee and for the wall I LOVE any of these: www.learningspaceuk.co.uk/sensory-room-c13027/floors-walls-c14150/active-walls-floors-c14151#page1:infscr5823

Ps I meant the cheaper things at the top of the page not the ones that cost thousands 😂

1Morewineplease · 27/01/2021 18:47

Have you looked at the 'Snoezelen' website?

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 27/01/2021 19:01

I think the Family Fund do loans of sensory equipment. That’s a good way of experimenting without the risk of spending ££££ on something your child doesn’t like.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 27/01/2021 19:11

Actually, scratch that - I’m thinking of the Newlife Charity for equipment loans:

Would he enjoy a ball pool? Our DS adores ours! It's just a little pop-up thing with some plastic balls, he loves the colours, the movement of the balls and the sensation of "splashing" in them. It helps us like nothing else when he's having a tantrum.

We also love our fibre optic lamp, it was just a cheap one from Home Bargains but he loves the way the light moves in it especially when he touches it.

GreenSeaGlass · 27/01/2021 19:22

Have a think about the overall ambience in the room. Is it a place for emotional regulation/relaxing? If so think about low lighting, gentle music/nature sounds, weighted toys/blankets (within recommended weight guidelines) and keeping it fairly clutter free as too much sensory input can be overwhelming.

I’ve bought from this company.
www.cheapdisabilityaids.co.uk/
Bubble tube, jelly fish lamp, and some other bits.
And I have glow in the dark stars/moon wallpaper in my daughters room. And a uv lamp. I also got her UV paint/powders to make wall hangings.

BlueistheNewme · 27/01/2021 19:42

This is the wallpaper

I can’t remember where I bought it.

Serin · 27/01/2021 19:50

Weighted blanket.
Something scented.
A wobble board.
Big bouncy ball/sponge cylinder he can lie over or rollaound on.

Serin · 27/01/2021 19:52

Sorry, I thought you said 8 years, not 8 months.

LadyCatStark · 27/01/2021 19:58

@Serin

Sorry, I thought you said 8 years, not 8 months.
Oops so did I!

Thanks for all your helpful comments. We do have a ball pool... his finger coordination has come along brilliantly trying to pick the balls up. The lighting is quite soft, and we have Alexa up there too so we can choose whatever music we like. I’ve just ordered a fibre optic lamp and an activity panel. Appreciate you all taking the time to answer me.
