Not an aibu but posting here for traffic.

I’m very aware covid can change taste and smell but this is more of an ongoing problem. I can smell fine usually a heightened sense of smell if anything. But often at times my taste is very bland. I can taste but it’s dull as in I cannot appreciate the full flavour. Sometimes It’s bland but I can get an after taste. It’s been going on for a while. I’ve been tested for covid about 3 times recently which have all been negative! It can last an hour, a day, a few days etc. Like I say I’ve been tested negative a few times recently as above.

Has anyone else been through this? I do have sinus problems which can cause me a mix of symptoms depending on how bad.

How can I improve my taste buds?!

I’m trying to find the cause. Even done things like change toothpaste and mouthwash just in case that’s triggering something.

It’s not that I can’t taste, I still can but it’s just very bland at times.

As far as I know I’ve not had covid before or anything so I couldn’t say it’s long lasting effects from the virus.

It’s not constant. It comes and goes.

Anyone experienced this and what should I do? Read things online about different things that can cause. Underlying health problems, vitamin deficiencies etc?

It can go on for a long time with CV, you may have tested too late. The tests aren't accurate after I think 5 days.

PinkDaffodil2 · 27/01/2021 17:47

How long has this been going on for? If less than a year or so then likely covid related, but if it predates 2020 then chronic sinus issues could be the culprit.
Have you kept a diary of symptoms and the foods you’ve eaten / mouthwash used?

Annie2930 · 27/01/2021 17:50

It’s been going on for a couple months. Tested a couple times at end of 2020 and again this month. It’s probably been happening for a lot longer I’m just taking more notice due to covid and all the symptoms. Seems worse during the cold months. My sinuses do play up when it’s cold and the heating is on, usually okay in the summer.

Might be worth doing a food + symptom diary for a couple of weeks, to see if there's a link with something you're eating or drinking.

I find instant coffee deadens my tastebuds, kind of. (As an example.)

I'm assuming you don't smoke (that would be too obvious!)

I had covid last year and lost my sense of taste for a bit; it was a different feeling. And I lost my sense of smell at the same time; taste came back after a few days, smell took longer.

@PinkDaffodil2 I’ve tried to make a mental note of everything! I have used corsodyl quite a lot due to wisdom teeth which has been known to temporarily affect my taste but I’ve stopped using it now!

the same’s happening to me. i had covid in october and my taste and smell recovered fine, but for the last few weeks my smell has gone again and all meat tastes rotten. i tested for covid two days ago and it’s come back negative so i haven’t got it again. it’s driving me crazy. i can’t even feed my dogs without heaving at the smell. i’ve spoke to my doctor today and he’s sending me for blood tests to rule out any deficiencies or thyroid problems.

Yes I’m a non smoker and also not a coffee drinker. I need to make a proper diary. I’m not sure if it’s complete coincidence but it seems to be after I’ve been using steroid creams (eczema). But I can’t see how there’s possibly a link between the two! Really is baffling.

This last last year I wouldn’t have thought much of it. I’ve lost my sense of smell and taste loads in the past with viruses (before covid). I am taking more notice of it now!

I’ve been reading about thyroid too. Thyroid problems actually run in my family so a little concerned. I have other signs too!! I last had a routine blood test about 2 years ago so might be worth speaking to doctor!

Corsodyl annihilated my taste. It’s quite horrid stuff. Just floss and use Flouriguard mouthwash for gun health.

Or even gum.
