What if they need water and have incredibly advanced technology? Shock We'll be fucked.

Which probe was it that was sent out directions of how to find us, can't remember the name? Never thought that was a particularly good idea.

Remember the spanish conquistadors, nly we would on the receiving end.

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/01/2021 02:04

I'm not sure there has ever been a story of a less technological race or species meeting a more technological race or species where it hasn't gone really poorly for the lessor.

Hailtomyteeth · 27/01/2021 02:06

You are quite right, of course. I've rarely encountered such a sensible point of view expressed on an internet forum in the middle of the night.

Attempting to contact aliens is foolhardy. It is also unnecessary.

DamsonBramble · 27/01/2021 02:07

They might be much bigger than us and decide we look good to eat..

Or wear. Or use for fighting. Or hunting. Any one of a number of things we've done to other species (and humans as well). Sad

Does anyone actually believe in aliens??

middlepuddle · 27/01/2021 02:18

As in little green men, no.
Is there other intelligent life out there, well it's a big universe and why risk attracting the attention of potentially dangerous beings

Hotzenplotz · 27/01/2021 02:21

What a daft question. Considering the size of the universe, so you seriously believe we are the only "intelligent" lifeforms?

Ridiculous.

Does anyone actually believe that in a universe with countless billions of stars with even more planets, billions of which will be in the Goldilocks zone... on only one did intelligent life happen?

Of course aliens exist. Do they look like us, are they close, will we even recognise them as 'life'? Who knows. But they absolutely exist.

liverpool1981 · 27/01/2021 02:23

I really don't know tbh I am just asking to see what people think

Mypathtriedtokillme · 27/01/2021 02:26

I think with the amount of radio, satellite and TV we have sent into space we have already sent out a “we are here!!” Signal.

But can you imagine what they think of us starting with the 1st strong TV transmission being of the 1936 summer games to “reality” TV of today.

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/01/2021 02:30

Even radio has only travelled 116 light years. That's bugger all. It's a tiny dot even in the Milky Way, never mind the rest of 'space'.

Userzzz · 27/01/2021 02:31

Agree we should not. Although I do believe they already visit us as I saw what I now believe to have been a UFO (a few lights that danced around each other, then stood still in the middle of the sky, before disappearing). I do believe that they have shown themselves to some people and i believe some of the encounter stories. After my sighting, I try to look out at the sky often as you never know when you might see them.

Aquamarine1029 · 27/01/2021 02:31

"If aliens ever visit us, I think the outcome would be much as when Christopher Columbus first landed in America, which didn't turn out very well for the Native Americans." - Stephen Hawking

I'm inclined to agree.

Think about what we've done to animals. They're intelligent beings, but less intelligent than us. So we've imprisoned them, we've made them do hard labour, we've eaten them, we've given them a bad case of Stockholm Syndrome and we've worn their skin as clothes.

I'm not criticising carnivores, but when you look at things from that perspective, it's pretty clear that it's survival of the fittest. It always has been.

If we suddenly get pushed down the food chain by aliens who are more intelligent than us, we can't really expect much more for ourselves. You better hope we stay at the top!

Yes, especially now with lockdown...

Winkling fat little Homo sapiens out of their houses like snails and eating us.

This still from the Beatles terrified me as a kid....It showed a King Kong type being reaching in through bedroom windows grabbing people..

To be fair if they bothered to send out a fact finding reco they'd sharp discover we've basically wrecked the planet we are lucky enough to enhabit, ruined all natural resources and are sharply on a downward spiral to very imminent destruction. At that point I'd imagine they'd tut and fuck off again with a 'you keeps your pollution filled seas and 3 eyed fishes 🙄'.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 27/01/2021 02:45

I agree with Stephen Hawking.

Humans have a massive superiority complex. We'd have no chance against an alien race capable of travelling here.

I think most people seriously underestimate the size of space and the actual distance between everything.

We are a tiny speck on in one tiny part of the milky way galaxy which is one of millions. The issue is that our evolution is such a short period of time, in the history of this planet, let alone the universe (and likely we will destroy ourselves in an even shorter time)
There will have been/will be life but some will be extinct, some will be just starting. Star trek type interactions are fantasy. We simply cant travel far enough fast enough to ever know.

1forAll74 · 27/01/2021 02:49

I think aliens are here on earth already, there are lots of them on the streets especially at night, you cant see their faces,or have a face at all, as they all wear the same garb, which is grey hoodies, and they lurk about upsetting humans.

Rummikub · 27/01/2021 02:52

Agree op
I say it every time scientists suggest they’d like to make contact. Love the Stephen Hawking quote.
