damn broadband shield

No idea if I'm going mad but got new broadband a couple of months ago. We have the settings as 18+ but there's been quite a few times I haven't been able to find something online and assumed it was me but now I'm thinking I'm being secretly diverted to safe websites?

For example:
Wanted to get me and my partner some kind of ahem, "toy". Searching for Anne Summers confusingly didn't bring up the actual website, just a load of random links about news articles etc. Lovehoney did the same. I assumed that maybe they'd gone out of business and bought something from anne summers via amazon.

Couple of days ago, searching for the 100 vaginas artwork after a friend mentioned it. Loads of articles, can't see the actual art.

I do a lot of research of hard drugs/crime for work and again have often felt like I'm not seeing all the content I used to when searching via google.

Tried disabling the shield all together, switching it back to 18+. No change. How do I know if I can't see certain websites? The most annoying thing is you don't get a notification saying that it's blocked, it just doesn't seem to exist!!

I want to call them but don't want them to think I'm trying to get hold of porn Blush

Do you have "safe search" set to "on" on your search engine?

dollyknocker · 24/01/2021 14:55

Search on your phone with the WiFi off.

Curiosity101 · 24/01/2021 14:56

Do you have a phone with 4G on it? If so Google for a term using your 4G and then see what the results are compared to if you're using Virgin.

There should be plenty of guides online to disable it. There will likely be YouTube and/or written articles on it.

Ah should have said - currently have no data so can't compare to see if different on 4G! Yes safe search is off thanks, and same issue with bing!

Bing is a rubbish search engine IMO

oldegg123 · 24/01/2021 15:00

@Ginfordinner fully agree with you on bing - just checked it as well as google to see if there was any difference..

Are you with sky? If so you can custom your shield settings. So you can block porn gambling etc but leave the drugs and crime bit out

oldegg123 · 24/01/2021 15:06

Thanks @Fluffyunicorn1 so this issue is that for the custom setting you need to give specific web addresses. I'd rather just be able to search like a trusted adult Grin

Also would think that with the shield turned off I'd be able to access anything and everything!

I have problems with Sky Broadband Shield - set to safe for children but will still bring up porn (I typed in "sex" just to test it). Very unhappy with this. Have reset it multiple times but considering binning Sky at end of contract because of this.

ScottishStottie · 24/01/2021 15:07

What happens if you try to search for porn?

oldegg123 · 24/01/2021 15:13

@ScottishStottie

good lord

I think potentially there was a delay (maybe 24 hours?) in changing settings and it just kicked in. Previously when searching for redtube etc I would again just get news articles.

I was just greeted by a full on vulva in a very compromising position so problem solved.

Thank you everyone Grin

and woooo I can see the artwork! For anyone interested :) news.artnet.com/market/jamie-mccartney-vagina-sculptures-321901
