Why not kindles instead of laptops?

EmmanuelleMakro · 23/01/2021 15:54

I see lots of clamour for laptops for schoolchildren, but honestly they would be better off reading rather than trying to replicate schoolwork st home. And given the risk if laptops being damaged/stolen:sold why not tap up Amazon fir kindles instead ?
Cheaper and much easier for working parents to supervise and obviously ebooks could be purchased by gvt on s license basis.
Children should be using this time to read and seems like this would solve a lot of lot practical issues as well as addressing the woeful literacy gap.

I have a fire tablet and I couldn't imagine doing all school work on it. It's great for browsing and apps but it's mostly a large phone that doesn't ring.

Pinkflipflop85 · 23/01/2021 15:57

A lot of the stuff we are doing isn't compatible with a kindle.

Ohbabybab · 23/01/2021 15:57

Kindles don’t really do the things a laptop does? We have one and it’s definitely not comparable. iPads maybe but not kindles.

SoupDragon · 23/01/2021 15:59

they would be better off reading rather than trying to replicate schoolwork st home.

How is that going to help with Maths?

Love51 · 23/01/2021 16:00

We have a laptop and a kindle. The kindle is a but rubbish for online schooling.
We don't have live stream lessons so not tied to children needing to be on the same device at the same time.

Ohbabybab · 23/01/2021 16:00

Also not sure how a Kindle is more help for parents compared to a laptop?

MissBaskinIfYoureNasty · 23/01/2021 16:01

Cause they're totally rubbish? We've had many for our kids and they're painfully slow and crap. They have ipads now.

Rockbird · 23/01/2021 16:02

Because they need to do more than just reading and kindle fires are crap.

Hopdathelf · 23/01/2021 16:02

This idea assumes all children learn adequately through reading alone and all subjects can be adequately taught through reading alone.

SummerHouse · 23/01/2021 16:03

Are you suggesting they just read on it? In which case they could try a 'book'?

majesticallyawkward · 23/01/2021 16:04

Because education isn't just reading books and children have missed so much the very least they should have is the chance to learn.

A laptop gives a lot of flexibility that tablets don't, a kindle or e-reader offers nothing

Notthisnotthat · 23/01/2021 16:04

Our oldest child has a laptop for home learning, they have teams, glow, Microsoft office etc makes home learning easy. Youngest child uses the seesaw app on her kindle, her tasks are mainly links to Ruth Muskin phonics videos and numberblocks so it is fine for that.

SquishySquirmy · 23/01/2021 16:04

Depend on the age of the child surely?
We use a kindle fire and it's perfect for the work dd does. But she is in primary school, doesn't have huge amount of online lessons and mainly does her work in a jotter.
For older kids, a laptop might be better. Secondary school kids need more than just "reading", much as I love books they are not an alternative to proper education.
ICT skills are essential, and being able to use a computer and type on a keyboard is quite different from swiping around on a tablet.

And many of the appeals I see are for tablets, not just laptops. This is not a one size fits all problem - a 16 year old's needs are very different from a 6 year olds!

RosaBaby2 · 23/01/2021 16:05

Kindles are shit!!

WTAFIhavelosttheferret · 23/01/2021 16:06

How do you type out you work on a kindle? or scan it in?

MWNA · 23/01/2021 16:08

@RosaBaby2

Kindles are shit!!
Utterly agreed.
CaramelCandle · 23/01/2021 16:08

Reading is important but a good education needs more than just reading!

smoothchange · 23/01/2021 16:09

Well if they were just reading and not doing school work, why not a book Confused

EmmanuelleMakro · 23/01/2021 16:13

Missing the point!
The point is not to do school work on a kindle -utterly absurd!
But to read.
There is s big literacy gap between homes with books and those without.
Not many other distractions so a golden opportunity to promote reading and let children explore books.
And the kindle has a built in dictionary to look up unfamiliar words.
Much more robust (and less sellable) than a laptop which will probably be diverted for gaming anyway.

My kids have a fire tablet each and a laptop they share. The tablet is useless for much schoolwork as the documents just don't format very well, it's hard to get Google Classroom and associated apps (we only managed it with one tablet) and it's rubbish for typing up lots of stuff.

We are saving for a second laptop.

idontlikealdi · 23/01/2021 16:14

Kindles are shit and small - eye strain. Reading a book doesn't help with maths.

LasagneLady · 23/01/2021 16:15

I don't think they would be compatible with Google Classroom, which is where all DD's work has to be uploaded. I don't think there even is a Google Playstore on Kindle, you have to use the Amazon Appstore. Besides- peering at a Kindle for all your lessons? Dont think so.

StepOutOfLine · 23/01/2021 16:15

So we're not going to bother with school at all but just read stories?
Can I do it too?
Will I still get paid?

redcandlelight · 23/01/2021 16:16

as pp say.
for home learning various apps/programmes are needed.
plys ideally the screen would be bigger than squint central.
plus extra keyboard and mouse...

MissBaskinIfYoureNasty · 23/01/2021 16:16

So buy them books instead.
