Has anyone started to pay ULEZ) charges for residential parking?

I am quite shocked to be honest. I received a letter that parking permit needs to be renewed and to follow the instructions on the letter. Upon registering and entering my information, it has calculated that I need to pay £150 before I can be issued with a parking permit. What a horror.

I have either been asleep whilst ULEZ discussions have been taking place or I have been Covid-19 focussed with no headspace for anything else.

I am quite shocked that the borough would do this at a time when so many people have lost their livelihoods and are facing so much financial uncertainties.

Driving is becoming impossible in London with the new charges, closed roads (some roads have been completely shut off near me thus diverting traffic buildup in surrounding areas), no parking, insane traffic etc. Some people including myself need to drive due to night work/childcare and so on.

Will it be a case only the well off will be able to afford to run a car?

I am genuinely shocked by the charge. It’s paid now but what if I didn’t have it?!

Anyone else?

This has been widely trailed for years. Pretty much all petrol car registered after 2005 are exempt. It's older diesel vehicles that are hit.

I can't believe you didn't know about this before.

EddyF · 21/01/2021 22:35

I knew vaguely about it but not the timeframe. In fact, on Google, it should be starting around October 2021, which I would imagine the press would have picked it up just before (and trigger my memory!).

Where do you live? It only comes into effect from October as it was pushed for covid and it’s also like £17.50 per day isn’t it?!

Turnedouttoes · 21/01/2021 22:39

Where are you in London? We had a letter through yesterday that said it would come into effect in October (Lewisham)
Most newish cars will be exempt anyway

Cactusowl · 21/01/2021 22:42

I think you need to check with the council, I wonder if it’s a scam letter.

EddyF · 21/01/2021 23:00

Thank you I will check with them (council) tomorrow.

I also checked the GOV.UK website by creating an account and entering my number plate. Message that came up said “This vehicle meets the ULAZ standard”.

Thanks again. Going to sleep.

Yeah Rhett doesn’t sound legit at all.

Frazzledmum55 · 21/01/2021 23:00

It’s paid with congestion charge not parking permit I think

Oh dear. I hope you haven't been scammed Sad
titchy · 21/01/2021 23:09

You've been scammed. What details of yours do they now have? Date of birth, password, mother's maiden name? Card details?

cyclingmad · 21/01/2021 23:14

Extension doesn't start until oct this year.

Embracelife · 21/01/2021 23:20

I dont understand.
Have you not paid resident parking permit before?
Parking permit is not ulez.
Which borough
Most london boroughs charge resident parking but there will be sign on your street and bays marked resident permit

Is there street bays marked?

Covidcovid · 21/01/2021 23:21

Sounds dodgy.

FindHungrySamurai · 21/01/2021 23:29

My resident’s parking permit for a ULEZ-exempt car is about that, and if I had a big car it could easily be three hundred quid because it’s priced on emissions.

But it seems weird that this would come as a surprise to you, unless your council has changed the rules recently or moved your street to resident parking only (surely you’d have noticed the consultation for that), or your DP normally deals with it. Possibly a scam.

MyAnacondaMight · 21/01/2021 23:36

Sounds like your local borough have switched to emissions-based charges for parking permits. This is unrelated to the ULEZ.

The more polluting your car, the higher the cost to park it on a public road. 41p per day to take up a large chunk of road that you don’t own feels very cheap.

mrdobalinamrbobdobalina · 22/01/2021 00:11

@EddyF did it actually specify that it was a ULEZ charge or just that the price of your permit has increased? ULEZ definitely doesn't come into force until October.
Whereabouts in London are you?

CorianderBee · 22/01/2021 12:33

We couldn't even get a permit for parking when we moved into our flat, even though the businesses down the road all park out the back of our house.

So now we can't have a car, but such is life in London tbh.

idontlikealdi · 22/01/2021 12:46

We pay £145 for our permit, did you not normally pay?

luxxlisbon · 22/01/2021 12:48

I thought ULEZ didn't come in until towards the end of the year?

Sounds like you are having to pay £150 for your parking permit, nothing to do with the ULEZ zone although london parking permits are usually done by emissions too.
