To think I'll get this cash back?

I stupidly went to an ATM and forgot to take the cash. It was late and dark and the cash machine not often used. Does anyone know if UK ATMs suck the cash back if not taken?

It gets sucked back in if noone takes it but you may want to ring the bank to check.
I have done this and got it back.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 17/01/2021 20:32

wow - I never knew it sucked the cash back!

stickysticks · 17/01/2021 20:52

Thanks @littleblackno that's a relief! I'll call the bank in the morning. I haven't used an ATM for ages and was so keen to go and sanitise my hands after touching the buttons I forgot the cash. Hopefully no one took it

It sucks it back in.
Check your bank account online and see. It should show.

BashfulClam · 17/01/2021 20:55

It sometimes does suck it back but not always.

Phoenix21 · 17/01/2021 21:08

It’s been a long time since I’ve dealt with this so things may have changed.

You need to call the bank, when the machine is counted/restocked, the totals will show that your money was sucked back and it will be credited to you.

Still1nLove · 17/01/2021 21:18

This has happened to me twice, about 10years ago though. The machine takes it back after a short time. You have to contact the owner of the machine, not your bank, so Barclays if it was a Barclays machine or the owner of the shop if it was a shop and not a bank. They total up the money at the end of the day and if it is over by the same amount that you ‘lost’, they reimburse you back to your account.

ScrumptiousBears · 17/01/2021 21:26

I've done this and didn't get it back. Some fucker took it.

Blackcountryexile · 17/01/2021 21:27

This happened to me a couple of years ago. I was putting my card away and was very surprised when the machine took my money back! I rang my bank and the person I spoke to asked me where the machine was. My money was credited back the same day. She warned me that as the ATM belonged to a different bank they would be contacted and transaction would be investigated. I never heard any more.

ScrapThatThen · 17/01/2021 21:32

They'll have you on video not taking it

MsVestibule · 17/01/2021 21:33

When I worked in a branch (MANY years ago) we used to balance the ATM every day. If we were 'over', we'd have to check the receipt and it would show us which customer had forgotten to take it. We'd then credit it either directly to the customer, or to their bank/branch. I can't imagine the technology has changed that much, so as long as nobody took it, you should get it back fairly quickly.

So if anybody does see some cash in a machine, stand guard over it so nobody can take it before it gets sucked back in!!

AnneElliott · 17/01/2021 21:34

My money got sucked back in the machine when I turned round as hears a loud crash (supermarket car park).

Bank said they could see I hadn't taken it and refunded it.

Whiskysoda · 17/01/2021 21:38

ATMs suck it back!

Worsethingshappenatsea · 17/01/2021 21:43

Hi I work in a bank and this happens more than you think . If cash is not taken then the machine will beep for a while and then takes cash back into the machine. Hopefully no-one came along and took it before machine took cash back in .

It will not be automatically credited back to your account tho and you will need to contact your bank not the ATM owner.

They will complete an ATM dispute / mis dispense form and depending on the amount involved reimburse you fairly quickly you can complete this process over phone with your bank and they will tell you the timescales .

Roadtohades · 17/01/2021 21:55

This happened to me at a strange ATM I had never used before. I couldn't see the point where the cash was dispensed (different design to any other machine I'd used) and by the time I'd located it, which must only have been seconds rather than minutes, I was just in time to see it being swallowed up! I drove home with a sinking heart and started took for the number of my bank to inform them, but DH suggested first checking the bank statement online - sure enough, the money showed as being taken out and then reimbursed a few minutes later, so I didn't need to do anything at all. Phew! Have you checked your statement? And a warning to all - when using a strange machine, make sure you locate the cash dispenser before you insert your card! It swallows the cash back with alarming speed.

Was it £20 in London on the day of the Poll tax protests by any chance?

(If so, thank you!)

billy1966 · 17/01/2021 22:13

15 seconds is what the bank told me. I got mine back.
I hope you do too.

Thank you everyone! It turned up back in my account a couple of days later all by itself! Smile
