Texting my friend about getting our hair styled when hairdressers reopen. I think that short hair is for young women because when you’re older it shows your sagging jawline, and a longer cut that hides the wrinkles is softer and more flattering for an older face. She thinks that long hair drags your face down when you’re older, and a short cut is more flattering for older hair that doesn’t have the texture and body it once had. We can’t agree! Who is right?

YABU = short hair is more flattering
YANBU = long hair is more flattering

I think both of you are right as it depends on the person and the shape of their face. My mum had a face that suited both long and short hair and she had a short haircut when she was older and everyone thought it was great. If I had short hair though it would make my face look fatter and I struggle with it curling out on one side. Sorry that this probably doesn't help the argument.

Fatherbrownsbicycle · 15/01/2021 21:24

Neither of you is right or wrong.
Some older women look better with short hair, some look better with long hair. It depends on the person, their face shape & their hair.

FortunesFave · 15/01/2021 21:24

I agree with Argh It depends on your face. I have a mate who at 50 has just got a bob after having shoulder length hair for years. The hairdresser advised it and said it would help her jawline.

All it does is POINT to her jawline.....but another friend has a bob at the same age and with her roundish, small face, looks lovely.

I won't cut mine off....it's long and I wear it up...I know that means I'd probably suit it short but I think of it as "the old cut"

So how do I know “which face” I have, haha. I tend to think my face looks old and hair hides it a bit. For example Meg Ryan was famous for her short hair and even she wears it longer now.

Absolutely depends. Iong straight hair middle part will drag your features down, but there are many other styles which can be flattering. Equally there are some shorter styles which make older women look great too.
Off the face is better so you are not going to be hiding much.

Your friend is right. Long hair on older people looks nasty.

Amanduh · 15/01/2021 21:50

Depends on the person. Their skin elasticity. A lot of the time their weight - face or figure has a lot of truth - their height, their general looks. I know a 60 yo who is athletic, muscly, thin and very fit. She has short hair, looks amazing. But have a young, curvy, voluptuous friend under 25 with a fab jawline - who would not look good with short hair AT ALL. It literally depends on the person, not age!

Yeah, looks like shit.

Oh and I would never think ‘Long hair on holder people looks nasty’ as it depends on the person. So for eg Nigella looks ‘nasty’ with long hair and she’s over 60?! She looks a million times better than she would with short hair, what a ridiculous comment.

Amanduh · 15/01/2021 21:53

*older 😡🙄

pinkstripeycat · 15/01/2021 21:53

My mum always had a pixie cut when she was young. Over the past 15 years, as she’s got older she’s grown it and it looks so untidy. She’s now mid 70s and has just had a pixie cut - it looks amazing and she looks so much younger

Giraffey1 · 15/01/2021 21:54

Neither is necessarily true. It all depends on your face shape, hair colour and texture and so on.

GeordieGreigsButtButtZoom · 15/01/2021 21:56

Is it really so hard to understand that different things suit different people?

It might be harder to wear your hair long when you're older because it might be thinner, or you just might find a shorter style is more becoming on you, but it's not going to be true of everyone. Plenty of women look great with long hair at any age. Indian women especially tend to get this amazing salt and pepper look and I could just stare for ages.

GeordieGreigsButtButtZoom · 15/01/2021 21:56

And with short hair too.

Fatherbrownsbicycle · 15/01/2021 21:57

Sofia Vergara is 48 and is gorgeous with long hair!

All depends on face shape more so than age but your friend does have the right idea
