Could your 10yo do this school assignment?

I had an email to say they were missing an assignment from Monday, so I had a look at what it was. They’d been talking about and I thought they were on top of it.

They had to plan a trip overseas for three days with a budget of $20k. The information they needed to include was:

Destination
Flight and costs
Why you chose destination
Hotel and cost
Amenities at hotel
3 days of 3 meals naming a restaurant, meal choice and cost incl drinks
3 days of 3 activities per day naming activity, cost per person and total
Total cost overall.

It’s for maths.

YABU - yes my 10yo could complete that
YANBU - no, they’d need a lot of help/guidance.

Mine could have done most of it at 10, but would be quite confused about what 'amenities at hotel' means

Comefromaway · 15/01/2021 12:47

Dd would have been able to do that easily.

Ds not a cat in hell's chance.

TeenTraumaTrials · 15/01/2021 12:49

I've said YABU. My DS is 11 and I remember him doing something like this a good while back. The only bit he might have struggled with might have been the meals.

Yes mine wrote as their answer. I don’t know what amenities are Grin

I’m not sure why he didn’t just ask me. He gave up after that Sad

He would do it, but I wouldn't book it, it wouldn't resemble an actual trip but might have a connection to the numbers involved. 😆

AryaStarkWolf · 15/01/2021 12:53

I would think they'd need a lot of help and guidance, my youngest is 16 now so I'm trying to remember but I doubt he'd have had any idea how much any of that stuff would cost when he was 10, purely because he would never have been paying for any of it

wizzler · 15/01/2021 12:53

I remember Dd completing that assignment when she was 12

gwenneh · 15/01/2021 12:53

DS is 10 and had a similar assignment earlier this year -- it was one of the first assignments in his Spanish class. He completed it on his own.

BabyofMine · 15/01/2021 12:54

I don’t know if it’s reasonable, but I think it’s a pretty fucking insensitive assignment when children will likely have no holiday to plan for a very long time.

AdaColeman · 15/01/2021 12:54

There's many a 40 year old husband couldn't do that without help from his wife! Wink Wink

NataliaOsipova · 15/01/2021 12:54

My DD did a similar exercise in year 6, which involved planning a route to get to a destination, crossing London and costing journeys and accommodation. I think it’s to get them to use maths in a practical context. I thought it was a good idea and quite fun; but less dry than the usual worksheets and textbooks. And a good example of why you need to have number skills in real life.

20K for THREE DAYS???

I agree. 20k is such an abstract number for a child to grasp when they don't know the cost of what they're planning.

I think mine could do it, but I'd probably have to sit with him to explain everything. He could do the maths side of things very easily.

Yes I thought ooooh let’s stay at a fancy hotel and eat at Michelin star restaurants. But we’re ‘flying’ in from the US, the flights are about 1/4 of that budget.

Yanbu my just turned 11 year old is good at maths but he would need plenty of guidance. Or if left to do it independently spend literally all day on it. At that age I would have loved homework like this and whizzed through it.

PaperMonster · 15/01/2021 12:59

Mine could. But my late teen students would struggle!!

wellthatsunusual · 15/01/2021 12:59

My nine year old had a similar piece of work to do recently. But they were given a tiny budget. That made it very challenging. He managed ok and I think it opened his eyes a bit as to how expensive these things are.

mamaoffourdc · 15/01/2021 13:00

Yep mine could

The maths is very easy. It’s the looking up flights , finding hotels, finding restaurants and checking menus to decide what to eat and the attractions that proved difficult for him.

A good exercise indeed in budgeting and planning.

Yes but my almost ten year old is home educated so I teach her life skills and maths that relates to the real world. She can also meal plan for a family of nine including “ordering” an online shop with a budget and working out timings for cooking the meals. She can also cook most meals but does need some supervision.
