I got a letter today from ESA telling me my medical certificate i had sent them is about to run out and I need to send them another or my claim may be suspended or cancelled....
I've been in the same job for 4 years and haven't ever been signed off sick in my life and definitely haven't tried to claim any benefits.

I'm a bit baffled how this has happened and the jobcentre people couldn't really explain it either but told me not to worry as nothing has been paid and there was no account details on the claim.

Aibu to think my identity has been stolen?! How do I get it back????

You can check your credit report for free to see if there are any unrecognised searches.

The letter could have been scam?

AJ1425 · 14/01/2021 22:05

I check my credit report every month anyway and nothing has shown up so far, but companies only have to report once a month so it might be too early to show. My first thought was a scam but the number on the letter was the same as the one I got from the gov. website.

Check the top of the letter for a code code or ‘look for the reference code.
on all the service users letters I’ve seen the number used are their national insurance numbers.

Does this number match your national insurance number?
It could be meant for someone else but with the same name as you

As others have said though I would double check to make sure your identity isn’t being used fraudulently.

AJ1425 · 14/01/2021 22:13

Yeah its my national insurance number and I spoke to the ESA people and they confirmed there was a claim made in my name.

Either payroll has fucked up, or there's something amiss

Ginkypig · 14/01/2021 22:18

Then I’d assume identity fraud and follow the relevant steps.

If it turns out to be something innocent or an odd coincidence then that will be uncovered

Ginkypig · 14/01/2021 22:22

Oh actually I wonder if esa can tell you what doctor surgery issued the last sick note?

AJ1425 · 14/01/2021 22:36

@ginkypig I should have asked that, i waited for an hour just to speak to someone so I didnt even think!
