Freaked out by my alcohol consumption

Bit of background, mother, aunt, and grandfather are all alcoholics.

I never used to really enjoy drinking that much, would have drank 3-4 times a year. However, ever since I became a mum 6 months ago, I've been drinking a bottle of wine a week on average, and within the space of a week I've drank 3 bottles of white wine.

Woke up and realised how much I had actually drank within the past week, so first thing I done was go downstairs at 6am this morning, and pour out all of my alcohol that was left in the fridge.

The plan now is no more alcohol!

Am I being ridiculous?

YANBU at all! I was just saying to DH last night, I've been having a G&T more nights than not lately where before I rarely drank, am going to cut back before it becomes a habit. Well done you!

If it worries you, and that’s what you feel you need to do, then you are right to pour it away.

I don’t think one bottle spread over a week is an issue. That’s 10 units over a week, which is less than the NHS recommendation.

The three bottles this week is more of a concern, but I don’t think you should completely panic over this. You are right not to make a habit over it, but so far, it’s one week.

No, yanbu or ridiculous!

If you have a lot of alcoholism in your family there is an increased statistical likelihood of you developing alcoholism so you are wide the be more careful. Of course lots of people with alcoholic relatives do not develop their own problems - the thing is you are in control of your choices.

Alcoholism and alcohol dependency is everywhere in our society, so it is easy for it to creep in.

I see friends drinking a lot and not really noticing, this is really common.

I agree - one bottle a week sounds fine, but three bottles would be more of a problem if it happens again.
