I just watched (or watched about a third of then had to turn off) Blended with Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. It’s obviously a shitty rom com but probably no shitter than any others around at the moment.
What really annoyed me though was the tampon scene. Adam Sandler is a single dad and needs to buy tampons for his teenage daughter. Cue him standing in the shop looking clueless while holding a box of tampons. Drew Barrymore comes over and, after discovering they’re for his teenager, tells him that the Super tampons are for more experienced vaginas (or some such rubbish) and gives him a box of the Light tampons instead. Then when paying the female cashier sighs and reminisces about when she still needed the Light tampons rather than the Supers.
Why do this?! Tampons are different sizes for different flows, not different sized vaginas! Any woman who has ever used tampons knows this. I had my heaviest periods as a teenager, I needed Supers then and now, in my late 30’s, I need the Light ones. Even if the (presumably male) writer didn’t know this, why the hell did none of the females on the film correct him? Surely Drew Barrymore at least could’ve said something?
There are so many awkward jokes I’m sure you could make about a dad having to buy tampons for a teenager. Why make it immediately misogynistic by making it about the size of a woman’s vagina?
It’s so infuriating and I hate that no one is ever called out for this shit and just let’s it continue. I know it’s probably a small thing (unlike my presumably now massive vagina as I’m no longer a teenager) but it made me so fucking angry.
