Hi, I've recently changed from Citalopram 40mg over to Fluoxetine 20mg and I feel awful :( I'm on day 10 and I was hoping someone can tell me that it's worth continuing to take

I take fluoextrine 40mg. It s really helped me but you do feel awful for the first 2 weeks.

Palavah · 13/01/2021 22:24

Could it be the withdrawal from citalopram rather than starting fluoxetine which is causing the side effects?

Frazzledmum55 · 13/01/2021 22:27

Can I ask how it makes you feel awful? @recklessruby

recklessruby · 13/01/2021 22:36

It only did at the start. I felt more depressed and tired and a bit nauseous too.
I have been on it a long time now and it's been fine, really helpful.

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 14/01/2021 04:18

I’ve been on it for years, took good few weeks to kick in initially, but once it did it’s been a life changer.

Hope it starts working soon OP

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 14/01/2021 04:23

It does absolutely nothing for my insomnia though. As you can tell!

GarlicMonkey · 14/01/2021 06:38

I was rotten for the first few weeks but then things improved greatly.

Cinderellashoes · 14/01/2021 06:40

For the first 2/3 weeks I felt sick, no appetite, cold, I had nightmares, and really tired. Now it’s been life changing!

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 14/01/2021 06:44

God I’d forgotten the incredibly vivid dreams. Thankfully not nightmares, just amazingly real.

Hot flushes was my only major side effect, I’d be sweating in a lukewarm room. Took about 6-8 weeks for them to fade, no problems now.

speakout · 14/01/2021 06:49

Great medication for some, but not for everyone.

FolkAreWeird · 14/01/2021 07:09

Fluoxetine did nothing for me (neither did citalopram), however Sertraline was a winner! It's from the same family of drugs and definitely worth asking your GP about if Fluoxetine isn't suitable for you. I didn't experience any side effects with it either and it only took 10 days to kick in. There are other options.

abbsc1 · 14/01/2021 08:16

Thank you for all your comments. All I can say is mornings are just the worst I'm waking up with horrible anxiety and In general I just feel so so down stil. Appetite seems to have gone down the pan. Not sure on withdrawals from Citalopram but all I keep thinking is why did I even bother changing :( i know the Citalopram wasn't working anymore I had been on them for 9 years . But now I just feel as if ive made matters a whole lot worse for myself. Would you advise sticking it out for a few more weeks ? I just want to feel better, I have everything to be happy and grateful for I just want to enjoy life :'(

I am so sorry you are going through this. Flowers
I did the same switch and fluoxetine was an absolute game changer for me once things had settled.

Palavah · 14/01/2021 08:23

When did you start.? Have a google but I think a coupl of weeks is totally normal?

abbsc1 · 14/01/2021 10:36

I'm now on day 11 , just awaiting a call from the doctor, feeling really anxious today 😓 just really hope I have the strength to ride this out 🙏

LynseyLou1982 · 14/01/2021 10:44

Stick with it OP. I've been in it for post natal anxiety since mid December. The first two or three weeks I felt worse and had insomnia but now I'm much much better.

LuaDipa · 14/01/2021 14:23

I took this for pms and actually felt much better in myself, but I completely lost my appetite and was just exhausted by 8pm. I lost nearly 1st in a week as I wasn’t hungry and couldn’t stay up late enough to force myself to eat dinner.

middleager · 14/01/2021 14:30

OP, I'm on day 19, same dose.
I still feel overwhelming anxiety every morning and can't sleep, but in fairness, I had this before anyway.

Not been on any meds before, so I've nothing to compare it to. Hoping that time/upping the dosage may help.

abbsc1 · 14/01/2021 18:01

Middleager, are you feeling any positives from it yet? I've spoken to the Dr today and he's prescribed me diazepam for the anxiety. I've never struggled with anxiety until taking this medication which concerns me

OP posts:
middleager · 14/01/2021 19:12

I am not feeling any benefits yet. Anxiety is my main condition normally and I'm feeling just as anxious.
I'd be interested to hear if the Diazepam works.

abbsc1 · 14/01/2021 20:31

When the doctor called earlier he offered me to go back to Citalopram 😬 but I've gone through this far I don't see the point going backwards when it may take time for that to kick back in! Im not sure how much faith I have in my doc now. Has anyone else had short term diazepam prescribed along side fluoxetine?

@abbsc1reading this with interest, how did it pan out?
