Zoom speed awareness course

Has anyone done one?
I have one tomorrow. I’m just wondering what it’s like. First speeding ticket in 8 years of driving. But all needs to be done on Zoom of course.

I've got one at the end of Jan. Ironic they're using Zoooooommmmm.

HelloThereMeHearties · 12/01/2021 15:12

I didn't do one on Zoom, I did one IRL. And it was really interesting, and eye-opening. Definitely helped me to be more aware of my speed.

spanieleyes · 12/01/2021 15:14

It's fine! Much shorter than the face to face one ( I've done both😔) . They are quite strict about keeping your camera on etc , you will need pen and paper and they need to see sight of your driving license. There were about half a dozen on my course, all fine although some clearly struggled with technology more than others!

Winterwoollies · 12/01/2021 15:17

I’ve done one. It’s bonkers. But better than points. The people running it did not understand anything about cars and advocated driving in very low gears so the engine screams to force you to drive slower. I pointed out the horrendous engine wear and increased emissions that would cause and was silenced.

HiddenInTheAttic · 12/01/2021 15:19

Yes, I did one yesterday. Make sure you are on time and have sound and camera on your device, and have your ID ready at the start, it’s pretty relaxed. I quite enjoyed it!

DynamoKev · 12/01/2021 15:19

Also done IRL not zoom.

It was interesting - most of all how few people have actually bothered to learn about speed limits.

Evidently even the the theory testing and more stringent testing hasn't weeded out people who have no idea what the standard limits are and how to tell what the limit is most likely to be for any road you're on (aside from the obvious clue of the signs).

I dunno if they do this in the zoom calls but we had some quizzes in which about 95% of people got the wrong answers - it's no wonder you see some people dawdling around and others going way too fast as most don't seem to have any clue what the limit might be :)

It was useful though.

Thewheelsonthebus23 · 12/01/2021 15:21

It’s tomorrow morning and I haven’t received my email with the Zoom details yet, does anyone know when it’ll come through, the original email said I’d hear within 24 hours.

Example - shown a picture of a standard Dual Carriageway people answered between 40-70 mph for what the limit might be (it was 70 for an ordinary car).

I have this next week. Quick question: if I have lost my photocard is there any other ID I can provide? Thanks

Pretty sure you can only provide a driving licence from memory - and if you have a photo licence it will need to be that. It will be in the detailed instructions they sent - it was for mine.
combatbarbie · 12/01/2021 15:27

Have you checked your junk folder, the email comes from the provider not the Gov dept that sends your letter.

Done it the other week, was OK actually

Thewheelsonthebus23 · 12/01/2021 15:33

@spanieleyes how long does it go on for?

OP posts:
altiara · 12/01/2021 15:40

I did one, was about 3 hours. Including breaks, and at the beginning checking licenses.
Mine wasn’t on Zoom but on MS teams. It was good, everyone interacted and learnt something.

SpudsandGravy · 12/01/2021 15:41

I did a RL one, and I too found it pretty useful.

Knittedfairies · 12/01/2021 15:52

My husband did one; it took about an hour and a half. I could hear the trainer from the next room - she seemed nice and laid back until someone's phone rang and she went straight for the jugular. She reminded the miscreant quite forcibly that he should have turned off his mobile.

Etinox · 12/01/2021 15:57

I did one way back in early lockdown. The trainer was excellent (I’m a trainer too and was impressed)

BradleyCooperwillbemine · 12/01/2021 16:26

I did one a couple of months ago. Was quite anxious about it, but it was actually very useful and the trainer was really good. Took about 3 hours. Nothing to worry about.

vanillandhoney · 12/01/2021 16:28

DH did a zoom one a couple of weeks ago.

It was fine - it lasted about three hours with a 10 minute break in the middle. He had to sit in a room on his own (no people etc. around) and was expected to contribute and take notes. They checked his ID at the beginning so make sure you have your license with you!

HiddenInTheAttic · 12/01/2021 19:49

You can use passport ID or driving licence photo card. You should have received your meeting invite today. If you haven’t, check junk folder or go back to your pro final confirmation email and see if it gives you any advice on what to do if you haven’t received it.

Mine also took hit under 3 hours.

HiddenInTheAttic · 12/01/2021 19:49

Pro final = original Smile

W25Charlotte · 06/08/2021 19:47

Has anyone had to do a speeding course recently? Are they still on zoom? When do the courses run? Thanks

Penistoe · 06/08/2021 19:50

I actually enjoyed it more that I thought. Trainer was very much ‘nobody is here to judge treat it as a driver refresher course’ which it was. Had lots of zoom meetings and training in work and it didn’t drag like some of them.

Boood · 06/08/2021 19:58

I did one. The instructor person made Aunt Lydia look permissive and lackadaisical. If anyone went off camera for a SECOND she stopped the course and barked at them until they were back on. She referred to us as “your good selves” in a tone that made it clear she meant “you scum who are basically slightly lower than shit on my shoe”, and enjoyed herself deploying her best sarcasm at anyone who got a question wrong. And then frequently berated us for not being responsive and chatty. Absolutely batshit, it was like something out of Royston Vasey. Oh, and told us that matching your gear to the speed limit (e.g. don’t go above 3rd in a 30, 4th in a 40 and so on) was the best way to not speed.
