In all this pandemic/wfh/school from home kerfuffle we've just realised we've missed the deadline to apply for sixth form for my son.

We had parents evening before the end of year and not one teacher mentioned it. There has been no comms about it at all apart from a one liner in the newsletter week before Christmas saying the application form for his school is now open and submission needs to be made by kid feb. We both missed this.

AIBU in thinking that lots of parents would have missed this or would have assumed other sixth form application deadline dates for other schools would be aligned? Or am I just a twat 😩

I'm on my 3rd Y11 child, and they never make 6th form deadlines obviously. I'm sure you won't be the only one!

Decorhate · 11/01/2021 23:19

It will just be an internal deadline. I would not worry too much - might be different if it was going to be a new school for 6th form

IveNameChangedAgain2020 · 11/01/2021 23:21

Thanks. The deadline hasn't passed for the school he's in but we wanted to apply for others to give us options. Is it worth emailing the schools or is it not worth bothering now?

Can’t hurt to email the other schools. I don’t think they are formal deadlines like primary and secondary.

BoomBoomsCousin · 11/01/2021 23:30

It can't hurt to ask. I would imagine lots of parents are in the same boat and the 6th forms will likely be flexible unless normally very heavily oversubscribed.

FortunesFave · 11/01/2021 23:44

Definitely email all schools you're considering....do it immediately. Don't leave things to chance...assuming it's too late is silly.

YouKnowItsTrue · 11/01/2021 23:54

I would imagine schools might be more lenient under the current circumstances.

Life is tough right now. I’d like to think you’d be forgiven for missing a school deadline with everything else going on.

Email them, it can’t do any harm.

pcmcgregor · 11/01/2021 23:56

It will be absolutely fine, there is no strict deadline for colleges or sixth forms. I'd be surprised if you couldn't still apply online?

LynetteScavo · 12/01/2021 00:03

Definitely email them! Whoever does 6th form admissions will be working either on school or at home.

If he's going to scrape the minimum entry requirements they might not rush to get back to you, but if he's predicted high grades they'll probably fall over themselves to be in touch.

Jellyshoeshurtmyfeet · 12/01/2021 00:03

My DS changed his mind about which sixth gorm he wanted to go to and we applied just before the Summer holidays for a September start. No problems at all. I think it's completely different for 6th form as the school he's at is oversubscribed for all lower years.

SonjaMorgan · 12/01/2021 00:05

Email them. At DC school the responsibility was put on the students to apply.

It's not like applying for primary or secondary. Unless the sixth form is highly selective they will be desperate for bums on seats and very happy to receive your application.

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 12/01/2021 00:14

submission needs to be made by kid feb.

Its only January? Or have I misunderstood?

TooManyKidsSendHelp · 12/01/2021 00:17

Just email the other schools you're interested in. This sort of thing happens all of the time and it won't be a big deal. Some might be full, some might not.

Not worth panicking over at this stage.

YouBoughtMeAWall · 12/01/2021 00:21

Mid feb? Is a month away.

sarahC40 · 12/01/2021 00:26

Round here the deadlines have been extended. Just email them

IveNameChangedAgain2020 · 12/01/2021 00:35

Sorry just to clarify we'll be okay to apply for sixth form in the school he's currently in as deadline is mid-feb but all the other schools the application deadline date was first week of December! It just didn't occur to me that the deadlines would be so different (and also completely slipped my mind). The application forms on the other school websites are definitely closed.

There is absolutely no downside to contacting the other schools and asking. Do it.

Sceptre86 · 12/01/2021 07:14

Definitely email and ask, phone too. A lot of people will probably be in similar boats due to anxiety around cancelled exams and uncertainty around covid. This should have been up to your dc to keep on eye on though. My mum had no clue as to the deadlines for different 6th forms/colleges when I applied!

Littlepond · 12/01/2021 07:50

We missed it too! About three days ago I suddenly said to my yr11 child - when do you apply for 6th form?! We looked it up in a panic and found we’d missed other schools, but not the one he is attending. He only wants to go there so phew! But I hadn’t even thought about it!
