No Gestational Sac or Yolk at 6 Week Scan

Jenks80 · 10/01/2021 22:34

Went for a 6 week scan today to be told pregnancy location unknown due to no gestational sac or yolk present. Off to hospital tomorrow to confirm if pregnancy ectopic or miscarried. Anyone experienced this and went on to have a healthy pregnancy?

Perhaps if your dates are wrong/late ovulation?
Flowers, I hope things work out for you.

BritWifeinUSA · 10/01/2021 22:38

In my case it wasn’t a happy outcome. It was an ectopic.

It’s possible you are not as far along as you think and therefore too early to see. What’s your HCG level like? Did you have a blood test?

iolaus · 10/01/2021 22:42

I had a scan at 5 weeks where they could see gestational sac and yolk etc

If you are 6 weeks and its not your dates are wrong then I would expect to be able to see something, I'm sorry

Pawpatrollers2021 · 10/01/2021 22:43

It is possible you’re not as far along as you think?

I ended up having IVF and it was a revelation how unscientific and unreliable dating a ‘natural’ pregnancy is. At 6+ weeks a transvaginal ultrasound will more than likely pick up a heartbeat and they’ll be able to measure the fetal pole.

How did the perform the ultrasound?

I’m keeping everything crossed for you.

Teaandtoastedbiscuits · 10/01/2021 22:46

Not me but my friend went for a private 6 weeks scan as she was so excited to be pregnant the sonographer said she couldnt see evidence of sac or pole?? It turns out that it was way too early to be scanned and her little baby is a year old now. I think maybe it is better to wait until a little later sometimes in case they can't see anything yet. Good luck tomorrow x

Godimabitch · 10/01/2021 22:53

The place we went wont scan that early because they cant guarantee they'll see anything. Dont worry just yet, it's super early, but try to stay calm and open minded.

297vic · 10/01/2021 22:56

Ive experienced both good and bad.
First pregnancy i was too early and they couldn't see anything on my first early scan. I now have a beautiful healthy baby!
Second pregnancy, early scan showed nothing but i thought since it happened the first time it would be the same and id be fine but it turned out i had an early miscarriage.
I think next time i will wait until i am further along so that i don't have weeks of confusion and worry of whether the baby is okay or not.
I hope everything goes okay for you OP! Its such a stressful time x

PurplePansy05 · 10/01/2021 22:59

How confident are you that you are 6 weeks? Did you track ovulation?

Icanflyhigh · 10/01/2021 23:20

Yes, DC3 I found out super early as hospital made me poas when I was admitted with stomach issues which later turned out to be campylobactor.

I was adamant I couldn't be pregnant as I had mirena coil fitted. POAS showed I was pregnant but a scan showed nothing. No yolk, no sac, no heartbeat nothing. They assumed ectopic and booked me in for a D&C because of the pain I was in.

On the way to the D&C I begged foran internal scan and they did it. This showed a healthy yolk and sac but still no heartbeat as was too early implanted - I was less than 4 weeks.

The result of that scan is now almost 9 years old and fast asleep in his bed! He was born at bang on 40 weeks weighing 8lb11oz and I've never ever found the mirena coil.

VestaTilley · 10/01/2021 23:33

@Icanflyhigh do you mean your coil is lost inside your body?! Please get that investigated!!

Ribidibidibidoobahday · 10/01/2021 23:55

Yep yep yep. Happened to me, healthy little boy in the end.

It was horrible. I watched them type the word ectopic onto the scan before later deciding that it was debris from a recent op they were looking at. My hormones kept rising in blood tests but I think it was maybe 3rd scan before they saw a heart beat. A week later perhaps?

There is a very real chance that your baby is not there, so prepare yourself for the worst, but it is still early so there is time.

Why did you have the scan though? Are you having pains? Can you be certain that you are six weeks?

Icanflyhigh · 11/01/2021 12:19

@VestaTilley I had lots of investigation at the time and since, and the conclusion they came to is that I lost it without noticing - it had only been put in less than 6mths before I was pregnant with DC3. It certainly isn't inside me and 9 years later I've had no issues at all - I was sterilised soon after DC3 was born.

Jenks80 · 13/01/2021 12:27

Thank you everyone for you words and support. Sadly I had a very early miscarriage. I am now experiencing cramps and bleeding like a period. Is this my period? Did anyone start trying after a miscarriage?

I'm so sorry Jenks, I've been thinking about you since I posted and was hoping for a positive outcome for you x
Be kind to yourself xx

Ribidibidibidoobahday · 14/01/2021 19:35

I'm sorry to hear that. Hope it's not too painful.

Cokie3 · 15/01/2021 16:07

6 weeks is way too early to even have a scan done. Many women barely even think they're pregnant at such an early stage, let alone know they are. These early scans cause too much heartache and worry than they're actually worth.

Cokie3 · 15/01/2021 16:13

Sorry to read your update. Yes, sounds like your period. Fact is up to 75-80% of all blastocysts/embryos don't successfully adhere to the lining wall, so come out as a period. It's estimated most women have had several early stage 'miscarriages', and they wouldn't know if not for these silly early scans that get our hopes up. A fertilised egg actually successfully implanting in the uterine wall is actually rare, as I said, it is successful only 20-25% of the time. Most women have absolutely no idea they had a fertilised egg because at least 3 quarters flush out in the next regular period. Hence why these early scans are a scam imo and quite dangerous for a woman's hopes. They should be outlawed imo.

BuffaloCauliflower · 15/01/2021 16:18

If your dates put you at 6 weeks it’s a miscarriage not your period. I had a MC at 5+3 and was told anything past when you would normally have your period (assuming regular cycle) is a MC. I’m sorry you’re going through this, I waited 2 full cycles to try again but partly because it was over Christmas and thought I’d just enjoy a drink, some women’s choose to try straight away its personal choice. It took 3 cycles to conceive again and baby is now 9 weeks old. Good luck xx

Hi,
Just wanted to leave a message to say I went for a 6 week scan and had a gestational sac but no yolk. Booked in for a scan two weeks later and honestly it was the hardest two weeks of my life. Fell into depression, didn’t want to do anything, so upset, waiting for a miscarriage. I was convinced my dates were right and that I couldn’t be any less than 6 weeks.

Had my follow up scan today and everything was fine, measuring 7 weeks - so somehow I was 5 weeks! Just wanted to leave some hope for others experiencing the same. I won’t be able to relax until 12 weeks but for now everything is ok.

Probe09a · 23/02/2022 10:28

I’m also so sorry for those that have experienced a miscarriage - I too had one in December and it’s heartbreaking. I conceived two weeks after the miscarriage so there is still hope for you xxx
