Person A: says that them wearing a mask at work only protects others and doesn’t want to wear one. Person A says that person B wearing a mask is pointless as it won’t stop anything getting through and person B is only protecting person A and not themself.

Person B: wears their mask in their place of work as it makes them feel safer and they feel that a mask will protect some of the potential aerosols from reaching them so quickly. Person B says that there is various research to say that wearing a mask can protect both the wearer and those around them.

YANBU - Person B

HNY2021 · 08/01/2021 16:36

Also the stops you touching your face & reminds people to social distance.

IndecentFeminist · 08/01/2021 16:37

Don't masks only protect others?

Saz12 · 08/01/2021 16:40

They give better protection to others, but some protection to the wearer.

Person A should be expected to pay heed to their colleagues health & safety though, so should wear a mask unless exempt even if it didn’t help protect them.

minipie · 08/01/2021 16:42

Um - even if it only protects others, that’s a good enough reason to wear one?

So I don’t really agree with either.

Tavannach · 08/01/2021 16:42

Person B

WeeDangerousSpike · 08/01/2021 16:44

What kind of person openly admits they're not wearing a mask because it only protects other people?!

MaddeningtheUnhelpful · 08/01/2021 16:48

My paramedic sister explains its to everyone by asking if you'd rather the person wet themselves next to you dressed or undressed. It won't stop spills no, but you'll keep most of it to yourself

CoffeeRunner · 08/01/2021 16:52

Person A to some extent is right that the mask protects others more than it protects the wearer.

However, that’s not a reason not to wear it!

Everyone should be wearing masks in the workplace if they are indoors/in close proximity.

IliveonCoffee · 08/01/2021 16:56

So basically A is saying it's perfectly fine for everyone to wear a mask to protect A but won't extend them the same courtesy of wearing one to protect everyone else?

Its neither here nor there whether they believe mask wearing protects just them, just others or a bit of both, but refusing to wear one on the basis it doesn't protect them personally is selfish.

EmpressSuiko · 08/01/2021 17:07

Person B, masks offer protection to both the wearer and others to different extents but everyone wears a mask the risk of transmission is very low.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 08/01/2021 17:10

Person A is a thick twat. Why is their mask wearing not being enforced?

Fieldofyellowflowers · 08/01/2021 17:22

If you wear a mask, you ar protecting others and offering some protection to yourself. If everyone else also wears a mask then they are protecting you. Seriously, who says they won't wear a mask because all they do is protect others? If there are no other reasons like health issues that make it hard to wear on then they must be very selfish.

'Wearing a mask at work only protects others.'

What a waste of oxygen...

Gingerbreadchoc · 08/01/2021 17:44

I am honestly surprised that 10 percent of people agree with person A Shock

I notice none of them have come on the thread To justify their vote Wink

What work is it? What set up is it?

It seems that person B is someone who would have people wearing masks at all times, maybe person A doesn't see the need in that situation.

Oreservoir · 08/01/2021 17:55

Person A is correct that wearing a mask is mostly to protect others but why wouldn’t she want to protect others?
Tbh we all know that the masks worn by the general public are pretty ineffectual against the virus but at least colds and flu are down as a result.

CSIblonde · 08/01/2021 18:10

Person B. Tests of cloth, washable & disposable medical masks found a 3 layer mask kept out roughly 80% of air borne droplets from coughs & sneezes: which were shown to be capable of travelling roughly 25feet. It was a recent TV program on Covid I think . So selfish to not wear a mask as it only protects others. They have a badly skewed moral compass.

Throckmorton · 08/01/2021 18:27

Person A is a selfish twat

StrawberrySquash · 08/01/2021 18:33

The whole point is that we have a mutual agreement to wear masks. And by A wearing to protect B then B agrees to wear one to pay it back and so everyone is safer.

It's like if you buy each other dinner. A pays for B. B pays for A. Everyone gets to eat. End result good. If only we could go out to dinner!
