To consider an au pair for my dog?

I’ve been wondering this for a while... I have a spare room and a dog that I spend a significant amount of money sending to daycare. Would having an au pair work better? Is this madness?

I think that's a good idea.

manukau · 07/01/2021 20:11

Great idea and the au pair would probably be delighted with the less onerous task of minding a dog

Historydweeb · 07/01/2021 20:11

This would literally be my perfect job Grin

Branleuse · 07/01/2021 20:11

What about a lodger. Advertise for a dog loving lodger on reduced rent if they work pt and look after him

RunningFromInsanity · 07/01/2021 20:12

Well it’s called a dog sitter, not an au pair

You’re going to have to paid someone a fair amount to literally just sit with your dog.
I imagine day care would be much more fun for your dog.

Notimeforaname · 07/01/2021 20:12

If I could make a living wage from it...I'd do it. Dream job!!!Grin
Yanbu. I'm sure there's lots out there who would love it!!!

YouBoughtMeAWall · 07/01/2021 20:14

Doggy day care can’t surely cost as much as an au pair would??

Notimeforaname · 07/01/2021 20:14

You’re going to have to paid someone a fair amount to literally just sit with your dog isnt an au pair usually about 80quid a week plus room and meals ?probably a lot less than doggy day care. Some day rates are huge.

notinthiseconomy · 07/01/2021 20:14

Dog Au Pair is genius.

CharlotteRose90 · 07/01/2021 20:17

If it’s a cute dog I’ll be a dog sitter. I adore dogs

Kinkybutkind · 07/01/2021 20:17

Looking after your dog and some light housework duties ? Sounds like a win win to me ! I do wonder what impact Brexit will have on European residents wanting to stay/work here tho ?

MissMarpleDarling · 07/01/2021 20:20

What an adorable idea!

Loveatortie · 07/01/2021 20:21

I will applyGrin

FancySomeChips · 07/01/2021 20:22

Dream job! Where do I apply?

QueenOfLabradors · 07/01/2021 20:23

I've got a dog client who actually needs something like this! Dog is a rescue, extremely stressed by his previous experiences, he's not in any way emotionally fit for standard day care or group walks. Adoptive new owner is lovely, and using lockdown time to build a support network ready for the future. He may get there one day, but that won't be for many months.

Vieve1325 · 07/01/2021 20:25

Advertise it to a student, they can study and take care of the dog at the same time for a nominal fee. Literally a dream job for a dog loving student!

underneaththeash · 07/01/2021 20:30

They don't work full-time OP - 25 hours a week is normal.
I think you'd struggle with the necessary childcare bit too.

HighlandCrab · 07/01/2021 20:36

That would of been my dream job as a student and now tbh, when can I apply?

Hangnailing · 07/01/2021 20:37

Oh this thread is gold!

Scolha · 07/01/2021 20:39

Hello, I would like to apply please. Had enough of working for the NHS.
Grin

DenisetheMenace · 07/01/2021 20:40

My daughter would have bitten your hand off for a job like this when she was a student.
I’m tempted to apply myself .......

DenisetheMenace · 07/01/2021 20:41

In fact, I’m sensing a gap in the market. Any entrepreneurs out there?

Newbi · 07/01/2021 20:41

Thank you! I’m now thinking about setting up dogaupair.co.uk lol! But seriously- where would I advertise? My dog is pretty easy and 25 hours a week would be loads- some light housework would be an amazing bonus I hadn’t even considered!! So maybe a lodger on reduced rent would be closer but I’ve no idea where to pitch it? Ideal for someone with their own part time or something that would fit but again- it’s always seemed too difficult to work out the details?
Ps of any of you fancy Surrey let me know!!

It’s a great idea. In many parts of Asia it is not uncommon to have a live in maid just for the dog. When we lived in Hong Kong there were 5 white standard poodles in the apartment above us! The owner had three live in maids. Two for the dogs and one as housekeeper/cook etc.

onemorerose · 07/01/2021 20:43

This thread title really made me smile, thank you! Why not if it’s cheaper. And I’m jealous of your dog, I want someone to come and mind me all day Grin
