Screen time - too young?

I have started giving my 16month old about 20mins of screen time a day. To keep my sanity. Not always age appropriate, sometimes they watch what slightly older siblings are watching. Then read online how it’s meant to be nothing until they are at least 2. AIBU?

It's fine. Unless by older siblings you mean 18 year olds and they're watching Saw

They say it's really not good for the under 2's

Not the content, but the flickering (or some such)

But frankly I think if it's a balance between ideal & sanity, then 🤷🏻‍♀️ I think the vast majority of under 2's have screen time (some from Absolutely tiny) & I'm no longer sure how up-to-date the research is on that anyway.

Frankly if it saves your sanity I'd do it, but I would watch the content as they understand more than we realise, but can't separate reality from what they see on tv.

What do you mean by "screen time"? A tablet, phone or just TV? If it's just TV then you're doing amazing at only having it on for 20 minutes a day!!

DulwichMum1234 · 07/01/2021 20:35

It’s just TV but think I have to change the programmes. It might be something like Scooby Doo or worst witch - I think the problem is probably that she is too young for that but just hard to keep her out of the room when others are in there watching the TV and I am trying to do dinner Hmm

Many younger siblings are raised watching their older siblings cartoons, eventually they might even get to choose one Grin

It's fine in moderation.

Are you joking -20 minutes ?! That is nothing don’t even worry. My 19 month old has been watching loads in lockdown. I’m not even worrying because there is nothing to do and I’m struggling to stay sane.

PatsyStone39 · 07/01/2021 23:23

Oh please, my two year old has watched the entire Jurassic park series...and cheers on the T-Rex. That's something to worry about, not 20 mins of Peppa Pig! Grin
