To ask my neighbours to fix their squeaky bed?

I live in a flat and the sound proofing is non existent. There is a lot of give an take needed and my upstairs neighbours are generally nice people.
Lately, I am woken up several times a night as their bed has become incredibly noisy. I assume it’s the ned, it could be floorboards but I imagine the amount the noise is happening it’s the bed from them moving around.
The obly way I can get any sleep is wearing ear plugs which I have done now the past few nights.
Should I just wear ear plugs and put up with it or do you think it’s reasonable to send them a message asking if they can sort the squeak in the bed?

Anyone? I don’t want them to feel awkward in their own home and I doubt they realise how noisy it is. But it’s really disturbing my sleep

I think you’d be better off fixing the sound proofing

redheadwitch · 07/01/2021 13:43

I don't think you can insist they fix their bed, its not really any of your business what condition their bed is in!

You can speak to them about the sound proofing problem in a general sort of way aka you have been struggling with noise generally and wondering if they have lifted their carpets etc.
If my neighbour mentioned my bed making noise, I would assume they were having a go at me about noisy sex and, being the petty person I am, I'd be louder to spite them!

our bed was squeaky, always had been, but it suddenly got a lot worse, it was waking me up as I turned over! I nagged dh and EVENTUALLY he fixed it, turned out it wasn;t that big a job and it made a huge difference.

So I would gently and politely ask them. It may be the nudge they need, but as redheadwitch says, possibly better to do it through general soundproofing comments

DemolitionBarbie · 07/01/2021 13:47

I wouldn't say to them that their bed is noisy. I imagine that would be unlikely to start suddenly anyway.

I'd say there's a noise so of a sudden and ask if they can check if floorboards have loosened. They might have just shifted the bed slightly and it's making noise because of that.

Invisiblewoman1 · 07/01/2021 13:51

Good points, thank you. Yes, I don’t want to dictate anything to them or annoy them but equally it really does just sound like thief ned when they roll over etc so should be an easy fix to an issue which is really affecting me sleep.

I will use ear plugs every night and if it wakes me up even with ear plugs I will make a general comment about sound proofing and noise and ask if they hear it too.

From all my rewards sound proofing after a property is built is seldom effective. These were built before sound proofing was a legal requirement

It seems a bit nuts not to mention that it's their bed specifically. I assume it's a metal bed, so it could be a 2 minute job with some WD40.
I don't think they'll see it as a comment on their sex life Confused
Mention it to them OP. Pointless not to.

Our squeaky bed is a wooden bed with metal fixtures. The metal was a bit loose. In the end dh screwed it together. But we porbably coudl ahve put cardboard packing in to the metal joints too.

CorianderBee · 07/01/2021 16:16

Problem is they're now going to be scared you can hear them shagging and that will make them feel monitored in their own home.

Invisiblewoman1 · 07/01/2021 16:52

@CorianderBee that’s exactly what I don’t want to happen as it’s their own home and they aren’t doing anything unreasonable like playing loud music. As they are first floor I genuinely just think they have no idea how much noise travels as they have no one above them

Oh don’t worry my neighbour used to wake me up every morning so I made her life hell! Now she is scared of me and I love it

HeyBaby2020 · 07/01/2021 17:30

Didn’t do that anymore 😉
