Well an honest one.

Bought Dd an old car from a trader, proper business with a small forecourt at an industrial park. I wanted to buy from a dealer not privately as I know by law if something is seriously wrong within 3 months they have to sort it. This was in Sept.

Speedo stopped working on the way home from buying it. Rang him up, he admitted he knew it had an “intermittent” fault. Said he would see what needed doing and that “even though there’s no warranty” he’d sort it. There is a warranty even the paperwork from him says there’s one for any serious or unroadworthy defect. Car isn’t legal to drive.

Took a bit of chasing about what was happening, he said he was going to buy a new speedo and get a friend who’s a mechanic to fit it. Weeks and weeks went by and I chased it. He said he was struggling to find a speedo. Then that day messaged to say he’d got one. Great.

Then a week later it arrived by post at my house which surprised me as he said his mechanic mate would fit it. But I watched a YouTube video, didn’t look complicated. Did it myself, car won’t start. Put old speedo back In and car starts. Texted him before Xmas to tell him I can’t fit it and what was he going to do. He said he’d have a word with his mate and get back to me.....nothing.

I’ve paid £100 to a local garage today to sort it and am pissed off.

Definitely leave an honest review - that’s incredibly shoddy and his cars sound both dodgy and dangerous!

100% leave a bad review, personally I'd be going to trading standards and returning the car with £100 bill.

Definitely leave a review. If nobody calls him out he carries on. It wasn't a genuine mistake.

Thanks. I hate confrontation and he has my phone number and I’m worried he’ll ring me.

If the confrontation worries you, don't answer but he could be ringing you to sort things out after reading the review (albeit later than you would have liked!)

How about asking for a refund of £100 and issuing a small claim if he refuses? More effective than the review.

And trust pilot too.

Would also be good. But leaving a review is the power that consumers have which makes businesses sit and take notice of their long term practices.

Is speedo the speedometer? Otherwise I'm imagining you fiddling about with a man's swimming shorts inside the engine!
