Mumsnet has made me hate Quality Street!

Used to love quality street, but I've been reading on here about them being full of palm oil and people hating them. Bought some for Xmas but they taste rank. I blame MN, am I being unreasonable???

Nah, not being unreasonable. More awareness around palm oil needs to be raised.

DracarysThis · 02/01/2021 00:16

They are fucking vile. I hate the taste, the smell and the packaging. Every year, at least one person gives me these horrors, I usually pop the whole lot in a jiffy bag with the Tory party HQ freepost address on the front.

alliejay81 · 02/01/2021 00:18

They used to be nice though didn't they??

I feel duped!! Confused

They’ve always been disgusting, and I’d never buy them anyway because they’re made by Nestle.

Comefromaway · 02/01/2021 00:24

They did use to be nice.

We were given some at work and two of us dug in. I actually got worried because I thought my sense of taste had changed until colleague said they tasted strange too.

Straycats · 02/01/2021 00:25

Used to almost bulk buy tins for Halloween and Christmas, gave up as the taste is seriously vile, leaving a prolonged gross taste, even many of M&S boxed chocs have gone down the same route, so they're off my shopping list too.
So it's Hotel Chocolat or surprisingly Aldi or Lidl's I'll go for these days.

Diverseduvet · 02/01/2021 00:26

Lifelong fan here, even I noticed they didn't taste too good.

PawPawNoodle · 02/01/2021 00:27

On the plus side you can technically eat the wrappers (not the foil obvs) so if you don't like the chocolate there's still something to enjoy.

DramaAlpaca · 02/01/2021 00:27

They were horrible years ago when I was a child. I can imagine they are even worse now with that nasty palm oil after taste.

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 02/01/2021 00:43

I've gone the other way. I used to love Roses, but can't STAND them now, so we get Quality Street instead - which I always thought of as cheap crap growing up. I wouldn't say I love QS, but if I'm buying a tin, it's never Roses now. They really do make me vom.

Perhaps because you get a lot more toffees in QS? It sort of evens out the horrible chocolate ones.

ViciousJackdaw · 02/01/2021 00:56

If you're consuming unsustainable palm oil, you may as well be eating orangutan a l'orange

AlwaysLatte · 02/01/2021 01:03

At least you can choose your favourites now. One son only likes toffee pennies so we got a whole tin just of those for him, and the other likes the green solid chocolates so we got those. They loved them and didn't complain about the taste.

Mmm, tastes like chicken.

Not to mention Nestle, who put profit above all else, including mothers and babies in the developing world.
Topseyt · 02/01/2021 01:31

I can't say I ever really got the fascination with Quality Street at Christmas (or at any other time of year, come to that). Not a fan of Roses either.

Both just taste sickly sweet and I also absolutely hate the fruit flavoured ones.

My preferred chocolate these days is Aldi Moser Roth. Love it.

TitsOot4Xmas · 02/01/2021 01:33

The Moser Roth 85% is 👌🏼

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 02/01/2021 01:33

Does all palm oil come from the forests though ? Is some of it not substainabld?
