Healthy eating - do you start today or Monday/when schools or work returns?

Happy New Year Mumsnetters!

This is a genuine, albeit lighthearted question.

I have some festive food left in the house and it seems a shame to chuck it out. Most of it is opened (chocolates etc) so can't really give it away. If it stays in the house then it will get eaten and want to be rid of it by Monday when life returns to normal!

What's the general concensus with you lot?

YABU - it's January 1st so eating starts today!
YANBU - It's still the Christmas holidays; I'll start Monday/when work or school resumes.

The YABU option meant to say "healthy eating", not just "eating" Grin

I'm starting on Monday! I can't bring myself to start today.

ememem84 · 01/01/2021 07:49

I’m starting today. The opened stuff will get eaten by the dc. We have a ton of Christmas treats but I’ve packed them away.

If I started next week I’d only open more....

IHaveBrilloHair · 01/01/2021 07:49

Finish the treats first.

Marmite27 · 01/01/2021 07:49

DH’s birthday is next week. We start officially the day after. A January birthday is bad enough without being in a diet 😂

Drivingthroughfords · 01/01/2021 07:51

I have quite a few "spare tyres" so lose, so I figured it won't be hindered by 3 extra days of festive merriment in the long term....

OP posts:
Drivingthroughfords · 01/01/2021 07:52

I have no DC to eat the open stuff. So it either will get eaten by me and DP or chucked out!

formulaquestion · 01/01/2021 07:57

I'm starting today and my (24 stone) DP starts Monday. Fed up of waiting for him and Monday there will be another excuse.

Surely even though it's Friday, there's no better date than New Year's Day!

Hollywhiskey · 01/01/2021 08:00

Why can't you eat chocolate on a diet?

CMOTDibbler · 01/01/2021 08:01

We're back on it on Monday

Drivingthroughfords · 01/01/2021 08:04

@hollywhiskey Nothing wrong with chocolate on a diet, but I prefer not to have so much chocolate in the house as I'm afraid to say I will keep being tempted to overeat!

Sorry, posted too soon. I meant to say, if you have the stuff in, it's presumably because you like it. Whatever healthy eating you do isn't just January or whatever it's for the rest of your life so it really needs to be sustainable so just have one biscuit or three celebrations or whatever in the evening after dinner - portion it out and enjoy it. Don't bin it or make yourself eat it now in preparation for the famine that comes on Monday.
I lost a load of weight last year following team RH on Facebook- they have a paid for app which is about a fiver a month and I did that which I think is definitely worth it, but if you don't want to pay you can get a lot of advice free off their Facebook page. They are a bit sweary but the advice itself is great. Good luck with your resolutions and I hope it works out the way you want xx

KihoBebiluPute · 01/01/2021 08:07

It is still Christmas until Epiphaby or the last mince pie is eaten (though these generally happen on the same day around here)

dontdisturbmenow · 01/01/2021 08:08

I started on boxing Day! Just to get ahead start! No really just because I just had enough after Xmas and felt mentally ready.

sevenonthemo · 01/01/2021 08:08

It seems such a waste but someone said I can't remember who and it really struck home that the food either goes in the bin or in your stomach that you don't actually need anyway and would be better if without so what difference does it make throwing in the bin

Completely misquoted but that's the spirit of it

dontdisturbmenow · 01/01/2021 08:10

so it really needs to be sustainable so just have one biscuit or three celebrations or whatever in the evening after dinner - portion it out and enjoy it
Haha, this is only possible once you've kicked the sugar craving out of your system.

I've read it takes at least 10 days to do so.

Same, my birthday is next week so going to eat and drink what i want until then... then the day after im going to try and un-do the damage from the last few months.

Im going to use the next few days to get organised with meal plans and grocery shopping. My joe wicks 30 day plan book arrived yesterday so im giving that a go.

Shoxfordian · 01/01/2021 08:15

I’m hungover so absolutely no way I’m starting today

Mrsbclinton · 01/01/2021 08:16

Why not start today and keep the treats for Saturdays & Sundays. (I know today is Friday, so maybe have a few chocolates on Sunday and then again following weekend)

Limit portion size and put the goodies away so they are not the first thing you see when you walk into the kitchen.

The all or nothing mentality wont work you are better off trying to reduce treats but still have them every so often to avoid a total blowout.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 01/01/2021 08:17

It start today. Always today.

*Tomorrow may never be mine"

Jammysod · 01/01/2021 08:18

Monday here - click & collect booked for Sunday, so my plan is to have a good read of the new WW plan I've joined & do some meal planning so I can figure out what to order.

SquigglePigs · 01/01/2021 08:19

A bit of both here - alcohol stops from today and meals will be more carefully planned but we will be finishing off some Christmas treats that are in the house and there will probably be an end of holiday takeaway on Sunday. Then from Monday it all gets better.

Nefbachmorf · 01/01/2021 08:21

We'll finish the treats first. I think they'll be gone by Sunday evening.

BeyondMyWits · 01/01/2021 08:22

You start when you are ready to start. Doesn't have to be all at once on one day. Just eat less crap, don't have to eat NO crap, just less, less often, gets easier every day that way.

Woolly17 · 01/01/2021 08:22

I party on through till 12th night. Because that's when all the Christmas and New Year birthdays end. It does mean I don't feel like eating again till Easter
