Education Maintenance Allowance ??

Parents - Student Finance, FE
Education Maintenance Allowance – EMA – is an income-assessed weekly allowance of £30 to help students with the cost of further education. It is paid every two weeks directly into the student's bank account. ... Receipt of EMA will not affect any benefits which are currently paid to your household.

EMA no longer exists in England but can be claimed in NI, Wales and Scotland. Link to official Government website below.

EMA no longer exists in England. Once he gets to University he will be able to apply for a maintenance loan. Unfortunately I am not sure what is available until then.

His college might have a student advisor who would know. He can’t be the only 20 year old to be at college rather than university.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 31/12/2020 08:59

Is he looking for any job? Or just ones he fancies?

Clappingforjoy · 31/12/2020 09:05

He is looking for anything but he has to be careful what he chooses in case it conflicts with his course work.

If he's at college can't he get a student loan? That's all that's available to those in education I think.

turnthebiglightoff · 31/12/2020 09:09

I can't imagine he is entitled to anything at all whilst he is living at home. He will either need to find a job or will need to be subsidised. FWIW I worked 20 hours a week through both college and uni as I couldn't rely on any family assistance. I'd also work overtime whenever I could.

AliceBlueGown · 31/12/2020 09:11

Student loans are for higher education not further education. The college will have a student services team - he should make an appointment.

cherrypiesally · 31/12/2020 09:55

EMA was replaced many years ago by bursaries that are managed in- house by schools/FE colleges. However funding for Post sixth form is limited until 19 yrs; basically a hypothetical year 14, therefore he may not be eligible. The college should have someone who can advise further on this but they may have their hands tied.
On another note- How is he starting university in May? term ends after the end of year exams In may / early June and doesn’t start till end of September; if this is the case he won’t get a student loan till September 2021.
