... that people are continually in debt? I have been thinking this for a while after belonging to local 'Buy, Sell, Swap' FB groups. The amount of posts of people selling stuff that is a few months old is unbelievable. I see post after post like 'bought this two months ago, paid 500quid but have changed my colour scheme, want 250 for it'. These range from 3 piece suites, children's wardrobes, dining room furniture, it is incredible! One even said 'bought this and my husband doesn't like it, half price, 300 quid'. What on EARTH are these people thinking? Don't they talk to their DH? Don't they think about decorating before spending hundreds of pounds?

I often wonder if they are bought on credit / catalogues etc then selling for some quick cash or are stolen etc

namechangenumber204 · 28/12/2020 20:58

Stolen would work (there have been a few of those recently too! - computers that have been given by colleges for remote working, bikes etc) but buying from a catalogue and selling at a huge loss wouldn't work would it - unless it is to get quick cash but a hell of an interest rate!

Well I assume that they don’t ever pay off the credit! Probably just go bankrupt, or move every couple of years so stay ahead of bailiffs? Or just paying off so. Much on credit each month they have to sell stuff for food money?
I’m sure some people are genuine and maybe do have money to burn to keep redecorating!

I tend to only update things when they die and cannot be revived. I realised yesterday that our bedroom curtains are 11yrs old ffs. I absolutely can afford new curtains but they are perfectly serviceable so I would feel wasteful if I just replaced them due to their colour etc.
I suspect that the reason I have the dosh to replace is because I don't do it - another reason of course is that I detest dealing with people on Facebook fucking marketplace.

Fifthtimelucky · 28/12/2020 21:35

@pepsicolagirl The curtains in two of our bedrooms and our sitting room were originally bought for our previous house. We moved here 21 years ago!

The curtains in one bedroom originally hung in my parents' bedroom in the 1970s!

They still look fine!

pepsicolagirl · 28/12/2020 22:00

Tell you what tho. When I was setting up my first home I was VERY thankful of these people who were flogging pretty much new stuff. I never would have been able to afford to buy from shops so Friday Ads was a godsend back then

shamus2020 · 28/12/2020 22:10

@pepsicolagirl ah Friday ads. I furnished my first house 16 years ago from Friday ads. It's taken my until now to replace everything to new. Mind you I was a single mum of 3 there no way I could of started from scratch with new.

StoneofDestiny · 28/12/2020 22:41

Totally agree - seen many adds like that including one of a 7 foot Christmas tree bought for this Christmas that they 'no longer like'. A few hundred pounds worth of tree with all the tickets/box etc for £20.

Sparklesocks · 28/12/2020 22:47

I have very little patience for marketplace. It’s a shame as you get some great stuff on there but some people are ridiculous - ‘paid £100 for this 5 years ago so looking for £95’. But yes I have no idea how people afford things aside from credit, or gifts, or pretending they got it new for £50 but actually it was £20 on gumtree last week - maybe it looks more impressive if it’s apparently new.

Barmbraic · 28/12/2020 23:30

@pepsicolagirl my bedroom curtains used to hang in my parents' dining room. They bought them with the house in 1991 Smile They are bloody exquisite though.

My and my dh are told to be rich by his family cuz we like travelling.

My bil in the meantime in 4 years have had 5 cars in the house. I’d says around 4 sofas. Redecorated rhe lounge 3 times. The bedroom a few more as well. Gym membership that is around 150£ Or more but don’t go.

My sofa is second hand (bought from him) back in 2012. Our house needs a proper upgrade but waiting to have the cash. But we like travelling in the meantime hence that’s why we’re rich Hmm

MandalaYogaTapestry · 29/12/2020 07:27

I am continually amazed at threads by people selling their houses and asking advice, when a house "needs" a new kitchen or bathroom because the existing one is not "modern", even though it looks absolutely fine.

TheGreatWave · 29/12/2020 08:29

I need new settees, they are 18+ years old and showing their age.

Long term plan is to re-do our lounge so I am not sure I want to commit to a brand new set until then, so I have been looking at market place, oh the grey, they are all grey, so probably many are just updating colour schemes.

Some people have more money than sense.
