To be dreading the inevitable extra fireworks on NYE

With most of the country being at home this year there will probably be more home fireworks. My Dd hates them and cries whenever they happen. I am dreading NYE this year. Usually one neighbour has a party. I am worried this year more houses will set them off. She has ear protectors but I am still dreading it.

How old is she

She is 10 and not really a nervous child at all. With everything else in life pretty fearless, not afraid of storms or anything but fireworks are her kryptonite bless.

The thing is, if you are dreading it then she will pick up on your worries and it will make it worse. My son has SPD and the best advice I ever had was to not ignore his triggers but to minimise them. So we learned about fireworks (and aeroplanes) and why they made a noise etc. We try to distract him as much as possible and don’t make a fuss when they are going off by not showing any concern or saying ‘that was loud’ or anything.
Good luck

Exactly what Preparedtobetoldimwrong said. It is your job to ease her worry not ramp it up.

DD1 was (understandably) terrified of fireworks after an accident at an organised display. However we have worked hard on that, and she is now happy (in fact delighted) to watch them from a distance.

I am just glad that cities around the world won't be burning cash and polluting the sky with the displays that seem to go on for ages. Hopefully they will realise that the wasted money could be spent on a better cause and we won't return to those big posturing displays.
