To ask about anaesthetists

Think I’ve spelled that right lol
Strange Q but was having a conversation with a friend and neither of us knew if anaesthetists have to have done medicine ie go down the conventional doctor’s route or is it a separate qualification which is more specific.
(In the uk) Thanks

Yes. They have to do the normal medical degree, hospital training...etc just as every other doctor does.

At the end of F2 they (like all others) can choose to specialise. Anaesthetics is actually one of the most competitive and hardest specialities. It has a reasonably high drop our rate as is boasts one of the hardest exams in medicine in order to qualify.

There is an ODP role which doesn’t require a medical degree and essentially acts as an anaesthetic/surgical assistant (practitioner) that’s a good way into a medical role for those who don’t have a medical degree. It still requires a specific degree though x
