To find it odd they only just told me

I’m late 30s and during a phone call to my parents discussing baby names, I was told that I was named after a lady who saved my mum from drowning whilst pregnant with me.
It’s a shock to know that happened, but to hear about it all these years later I find strange the way she announced it so casually. Should I assume there is more to it or she just doesn’t see it as a big deal? Of course I’m grateful to the lady, whoever she is, but it’s a ‘story’ I’d have told my children as soon as they were mature enough.
They kept in touch and she knew I was named after her, though they haven’t spoken for 35 years or so. AIBU?

Maybe shock /terror prevented your dm turning it into a tale to tell all.
Sounds bloody horrific op.
Glad you made it!!

Was it a ‘I’ve never told you this before, but...’ moment - or is there a chance she thought she’d told you years ago? Because a (worrying) number of times, my mother has mentioned something that she clearly expects me to know about, but that I know damn well she’s never told me.

It was a spontaneous ‘by the way...’ type of story. We’ve had plenty of baby name chats from having my other children, so she’s had many opportunities. I’m now suspicious of the facts behind the near drowning, but I didn’t want to ask too many questions as I know it could be traumatic. She must have valued the lady to have named her baby after her. She doesn’t usually hide things from me so it’s unusual she has kept this one for so many years.

Wow that’s a remarkable story, even if not as dramatic as it sounds. I’m guessing she didn’t want to unnerve you with it when you were little and then over the years it retreated into history. Glad you got here!
