Turning down a job offer.

radiateforme · 21/12/2020 15:25

I am such an idiot. Applied for numerous jobs and was offered all of them. All emailed me, except one who phoned and really put me on the spot. I thought I wanted this position, and said I would accept (no contract signed). Now been offered more money by someone else. The reason i turned the other job down was because it didn't pay enough, but they've rectified that dilemma. Now I feel incredibly guilty for accepting the other job (which I only accepted today) and he's gone off for christmas and may have turned down other applicants. How do I approach this now? Did I deal with this totally wrong? Help!

I wish I had thought on the spot and asked for more time!

I always worry about this as not sure whether it's a verbal agreement. Tell them IMMEDIATELY as it's so soon they can make an offer to another candidate pretty quick with no time lost!

Dozer · 21/12/2020 15:40

It’s fine, if you’re now sure just email asap and notify the one you turned down that on reflection you won’t be accepting.

Even if they’ve declined other applicants they can still contact the next person on their list and offer it.

radiateforme · 21/12/2020 15:42

I will email now. I feel so guilty

Don’t feel guilty! Men usually don’t. It’s just part and parcel of recruitment for organisations.

Dozer · 21/12/2020 15:44

Being negative about yourself (especially when you’ve done nothing wrong) won’t help you at work. Nothing at all wrong with applying for numerous jobs or choosing the offer you think best for yourself.

TeachesOfPeaches · 21/12/2020 15:46

It happens all the time, the back up candidate will now get an offer for Xmas

To be fair, no-one actually 'goes off' for Christmas, they always have one eye on their email. Blinking well email them and recind the offer
radiateforme · 21/12/2020 15:49

They seemed so excited to have me on board. I have real issues around guilt. Never serves me well!

Stop feeling guilty.
It was verbal and they put you on the spot.

Do whatever is best for you.
Just all them and don't think of it again.

Also congrats Flowers

SimplyRadishing · 21/12/2020 15:52

Just email* 🤦‍♀️

radiateforme · 21/12/2020 15:53

I've emailed. Argh!

OP posts:
radiateforme · 21/12/2020 15:55

I really hope they haven't let the other applicants down yet!

EasyPeasyHappyCheesy · 21/12/2020 15:57

Even if they have let the other person down they can still offer. I have had to do this with recruitment and the 2nd person took the job a week after I had said they did not get the role and gave them feedback re the reasons why. It was OK. Part and parcel of recruitment

2BDIs · 21/12/2020 16:15

Don't worry about it, just send a polite email saying thank you for the offer but unfortunately after further consideration you will decline Its business the person that offered you the job really won't care. As a candidate I've been rejected for a job and a week later got offered it so know I was 2nd choice and the 'winner' changed their mind but I didn't care, it was a job I really wanted so accepted it

Maria1990 · 21/12/2020 16:37

I would have emailed and outlined I've had a better offer. Nothing like a bidding war to get your salary moving up quickly 😂

radiateforme · 21/12/2020 17:10

He emailed back saying how sad he was to hear that. Ugh. Feel terrible. Oh well.

I know how you feel Op...ive been on 80% furlough since March and so ive applied for other jobs...i had an interview saturday that went really well and i have an interview tomorrow...if they both offer i will have to turn one down and i will feel guilty and like ive wasted peoples time.

partyatthepalace · 21/12/2020 17:55

Glad you’ve got it sorted, but I don’t see any reason you should feel bad. Why do you think you should?

It’s the way it goes. You’ve let him know soon as poss, and whoever was second will get the job, which will give that person a v happy C’mas.

Congrats on your new gig!

MillieMooBee · 21/12/2020 18:09

I work in recruitment and honestly.... don't worry about it. These things happen all the time! Much better that they know and can offer to someone else who really wants the job.

Totally get that you feel guilty but you definitely don't need to.... 😀

InTheLongGrass · 21/12/2020 18:13

@myusernamewastakenbyme dont feel guilty. The interviewers are looking at more than one candidate, why shouldnt you look at more than one company??

louisejxxx · 21/12/2020 18:19

You’ve done the right thing - if you hadn’t emailed to withdraw you would have always wondered “what if” re the job you preferred originally.

I was in a similar position a couple of months ago - interviewed for 2 jobs and was waiting on both to come back to me...I wanted one more than the other and the “wrong” one came back to me and I essentially had to stall them and they then went with someone else. I then didn’t get the job I preferred either.

Thankfully these things usually work out themselves - I interview for the perfect role a couple of days later and I’ve worked for that company for 2 months now Smile

Good luck in your new job!

myusernamewastakenbyme · 21/12/2020 18:57

I just got offered the one i interviewed for Saturday...i've accepted and will cancel tomorrows interview.
