To think someone is spoofing me

In the past few days I’ve had a few missed calls from random numbers that are similar to mine but not mine. Eg 2 or 3 digits different. Thought it was odd but maybe coincidence.

However today someone has left me a message saying I had called them, leaving his name for me to return the call. I also had a text saying similar. I don’t know these people or numbers.

AIBU to think this is so odd and potentially someone is spoofing using my mobile number? If so what can I do about it?

My mum is in hospital with COVID, I’m trying to buy/sell a house, work is so busy and changing my number or having my identity stolen would really be the last straw for me this year.

Spam callers frequently fake their calling number, and a common tactic is to use one that's just a digit different from the number they're calling - it makes their target pick up out of curiosity. Your identity hasn't been stolen, someone's just made some calls with your number spoofed as the caller ID. They have no idea who you are.

Some people get a new number and can't remember it.

I had two calls - one saying my new Range Rover was ready for collection and one saying could I collect April from school as she was unwell. I called the school back to tell them but my Range Rover still hasn't arrived!

If you don’t know the caller, don’t phone them back!!

I have had the one digit different to my number before. I didn't answer and they didn't leave a message. I however get lots of calls on my home phone claiming to be from Amazon or BT. Hope you mum is better soon OP.

I wouldn’t call back usually it’s a scam call.

I did have a random company registered on directory enquiries with my number. Had to ask them to remove my number as it was incorrect.
