Office chair

Posting here for traffic. I started back to work in November after a long career break, at first office based, but with the second lockdown and now being in tier 4 I’m mostly working from home, and suspect this will continue. Decided my Christmas present to myself needs to be a new chair.
I’ve a cheap falling apart office chair and my back is not happy. Anybody got any recommendations for a good, comfortable office chair? Also needs to be easy to put together (I’m not the most DIY savvy) or come assembled but not too heavy to carry up two flight of stairs to the home office space.

No idea but following for ideas.

I WFH FT and never asked the office for a comfortable chair, still using a dining chair.

I got a significant pay rise during lockdown so thought it was cheeky to ask for a chair too, but everyone else has it seems.

Definitely check with your company because my company who were tight in every other way got everyone to do a health and safety assessment, if you said your chair was unsuitable a new one was provided.

Ikea is your friend, I don't know what models are available at the moment but they always have reasonably priced office chairs with good back support (don't look at the pretty ones, go for the high backed unattractive ones and if possible - don't know if they're open in your area - go and test them first). Even if you can't see them beforehand don't worry, as long as you choose a fully adjustable one). Get the armrests too if they're optional.

And they're easy to assemble.

What's your budget like as that will massively influence the outcomes?

Under £100 something like this would be good.

Under £500 you can get a lot more for your money and something like this would be good

If money is no object buy a Herman Miller chair.

I don't like office chairs. I find a normal dining chair with two cushions (one to sit on, one at my back) the most comfortable.

harrietm1987 · 21/12/2020 13:49

I got a Sayl task chair in the summer after months of wfh in a Crap chair. It’s amazing. Wasn’t cheap but worth it. It came fully assembled.

It’s a Herman Miller - meant to say.

yes to ikea.
I have langfjaell which is not as chunky as many other office chairs. assembly is easy.

I bought this one in the first lockdown. Note that it is not height adjustable (you should look for one that is) (it's the perfect height for me and I also bought a squishy foot rest) but it swivels 180 degrees and as I am working in my bedroom I wanted my desk area to look nice. I love it. www.woods-furniture.co.uk/twist-dining-chair-mustard/p7683

I have the top one in I just dont cares post and its perfect for what I needed and easy to put together (i put together 3 different chairs in December and all are pretty simple to put together)

YorkshirePuddingsGreatestFan · 30/01/2021 15:59

If you don't mind second hand, have a look on www.2ndhnd.com/

I got a lovely chair on there for a fifth of the RRP. It's in great condition and very comfortable.

StCharlotte · 30/01/2021 16:07

I got this one last year in cream and it's fine. And I'm quite heavy Grin

I needed a swivel chair with wheels. Very easy to put together.

Ours is from IKEA black mesh in part but very comfortable - around £120

ShirleyPhallus · 30/01/2021 16:42

I’m following because I want one that is nice and doesn’t look like an office chair but also is ergonomic and comfortable and has an 1899 point adjustable system

This chair has amazing lumber support - second hand versions come up frequently on ebay and in second hand office furniture shops. Make sure you choose the Diffrient as the Liberty (looks similar) but is nowhere near as good.

Fourmagpies · 30/01/2021 17:32

I've ordered this one as wanted something that looks nice. Hasn't arrived yet so can't tell you if it's comfy. www.marksandspencer.com/latimer-office-chair-grey/p/ftp22426079?color=GREY

Look at eBay - I bought one in the summer that retailed at over £360, nearly new & I paid just over £30, collected it from an office about five minutes drive away.
I kept my eye on what was about for just over a week. before I honed in on the one I wanted.
The trick is to look at the make/model and find it outside of eBay to see what you're getting (and select Auction only).
There is an awful lot of crap ex-argos that amazingly sells for pretty close to the price new in argos.

Quite a lot of local offices have also got rid of stuff on freecycle.

Wayfair is worth looking at for good discounts too - they didn't have much stock back in July when I was looking though.

Tinkletwat · 30/01/2021 17:51

Bought my Humanscale chair several years ago, rep leant me 2 chairs so I could choose which I wanted. Had a problem with it a few months back, got in touch with where I purchased it and within a couple of days someone came to fix it (in my garden!).

Wasn't cheap but I work from home normally anyway so wanted a good quality chair. Got to choose the colours so it doesn't look too 'officey'.

helen560 · 03/04/2021 10:49

I recently bought an office and chair for my in-house office from Qwork is product quality is too good and the chair is so comfortable and helps to maintain your posture and back pain, and their price are so reasonable to know they offer discount and free delivery check-out the store I hope you will like their products www.couponcodest.com/view/qwork-office
