To quit Mumsnet u til this new advertising goes away?

I get that times are tough and MN needs advertising revenue.

But I can hardly read my screen with the current (Mercedes Benz ) banners on right and left.

The fact I don’t even drive could mean I’m not the target audience, but they’ve been appearing all through the day and are a real hindrance.

MN, will you please let me know when these lateral banners are removed, so I can flock back?

Tia

Can't you use an ad blocker?

Yellownotblue · 19/12/2020 01:05

Good idea! Can you recommend one that is free and works on Safari?

I use ad blocker on my laptop.

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/12/2020 01:11

I use AdBlock.

But I also paid for Premium MN because I spend time on here and value the place. They ain't doing this for free.

UrghThisIsHard · 19/12/2020 01:34

It’s the way the ads flash that destroys me (mobile version). Sometimes I have to go elsewhere even when I’d quite like to hang around.

And they don’t get a penny from The Mail or The Sun for the clickbait content we as users generate?

NekoShiro · 19/12/2020 02:14

Another for AdBlock, if you click onto setting on Firefox it should have an options for 'extensions' you can search for AdBlock or it might be AdBlock plus, read the reviews before installing it to make sure you're in the right place and it's a feature you can turn on or off, works really well for YouTube as well.

I think the reason that adblockers exist in the first place is because websites overstep the boundaries with adverts. If you got one or two unobtrusive ones that are there promoting goods, for you to click on if you're interested, I think most people would accept that as part of the deal and leave it. However, once many websites started with the endless pop-ups and in-your-face ones that obscure content and hang around like an unflushable turd, users react by blocking ALL adverts wherever they can.

I particularly hate the video ones - always seem to be with that woman in the green top or the baby monitor one - that come straight back further down the screen if you close them. If I grab my tablet for a quick look for a few minutes before putting it back down again, it means that I always have to remember to put it back to sleep afterwards. Normally, it times out and goes back to sleep after a couple of minutes of inactivity, but because it thinks I'm still using it to watch an (endless) video, it stays on forever, potentially until the battery is dead.

AYBU because you should know better op.

The internet has been mainstream for over 20 years now :-P

Belledan1 · 19/12/2020 06:02

I pay the premium. Think it's worth it . Gives me lots of entertainment so worth it No ads and can just read op posts in one go for updates etc. I don't think you can do that normally.

CodenameVillanelle · 19/12/2020 06:04

What are you accessing mumsnet on? There are no ads like that on safari
