To buy furniture before completion?

I’m recently divorced and in the process of buying my own house. My ex husband has sold an investment property for me to fund my new purchase. This has already completed and I have the funds in my account.

Due to my solicitors shutting down over Christmas I can’t complete on my house until the new year. Due to Covid they went to exchange and complete on the same day.

There is no chain and my vendors have already moved out.

AIBU to order some new furniture for the new house now? It has a 6 week delivery time and I’d rather minimise the time I’m waiting for it.

If the sale falls through, will you have anywhere to store it, even paid for storage?

Will it all go on sale in Jan?

I would otherwise you’ll be without furniture at the time of year when you have no alternative to being stuck indoors.

I wouldn't. I complete on mine in January but have held off ordering furniture. Although I have furniture already in my current house.

I've been delayed so many times, I just won't take a gamble anymore.

Only if you know what you’d do with it if something went wrong.

We’re waiting to exchange and I’m itching to buy stuff but I’m so nervous.

We did and it almost backfired. Our exchange and completion was pushed back a couple of times at the last minute and the sofas were ready on time.
We managed to ghost the company trying to deliver them for a week or so then eventually had to answer the phone and they agreed to hold on to them for another month at the depot. In the end we had them delivered the day after we moved in which was lucky but we could have ended up without them or having to put them in a storage unit.
Just double check with whoever you're buying from that they can be flexible with storage/delivery provided the purchase is completely nailed on.
