Sore throat all winter.

Anyone else the same? For a few years now one experienced a sore throat on and off all winter. I don’t think it’s contagious. It isn’t overly painful just scratchy and dry.

I did suffer a bit this year throughout the summer too.

Doctors don’t seem to think it’s anything serious.

It’s not very painful just annoying really. Mainly in the morning. Never feel ill with it.

What could it be?

Central heating?
Cold weather?
Acid reflux? I do suffer from this but the issue with the throat is mainly in winter
I also suffer from bruxism and TMJ disorder which probably doesn’t help.
Everything just seems to effect my throat 😭

I don’t think it’s viral as I would have passed it on to other household members at least once but they never get it.

Anyone else the same?

I went to the GP about it many years ago. They said a few things could cause it, I think. One of which is changes in temperature. Which kind of makes sense, going from warm inside to cold outside.

My husband always has a sore throat because he sleeps with his mouth open and it gets dry during the night. He also snores like a pig because of it and keeps me awake so I tend to have zero sympathy now.

The cold weather and central heating always play havoc with my sinuses in the winter months.
Every night I wake several times with a stuffy nose and congestion. This can sometimes lead to a dry throat as well.
Someone suggested a humidifier to put some moisture back in the air. I haven’t tried it yet but plan to invest in one in the new year.
Might be worth a try op?

Yes, it's really uncomfortable isn't it?

I've got that at present and combined with nose problems etc did a COVID test (negative). It probably is seasonal.

You can try the pharmacist.

Thanks all. My sinuses are often affected too but sometimes not!

I also think sugar can make my throat dry? Can anyone relate? I find if I consume too much of it I get a dry throat the next day. Bizarre but I’m noticing a pattern!

I've had a sore throat since March. No one else has caught anything, no other symptoms. I wondered if it's reflux too, as I get that sometimes, but not all the time. Can't be bothered to call my gp about it, as they will just dismiss it like they seem to dismiss most things. Chemist will just give me throat tablets I've already tried.

Msloverlover · 17/12/2020 09:50

Acid reflux I’d say. I’ve had it so badly this year due to anxiety. It causes all sorts of weird symptoms like sore ears, cough, sore throat etc

LastChristmas19 · 17/12/2020 10:03

Anxiety sufferer here too @Msloverlover (that causes the bruxism and tmj symptoms)! Hard isn’t it! Because I have anxiety every time I get a sore throat I doubt myself and think oh could this be covid, do I need to get a test, isolate etc when I know it’s just normal for me and never feel ill with it! 🤨

Do you do a lot of online talking? I'm a tutor and have been online since March. Teaching on Zoom has given me a permanent scratchy throat (also a TMJ sufferer too). I am constantly wondering if it's turning into a cold or Covid.

I guess that won't help if it's something you've suffered from for years, but I've come across many people this year with 'Zoom throat'.

I often find that dairy products, especially chocolate, can make my throat very dry and scratchy too. My old music teacher at school always used to tell us that we should never eat chocolate before singing!

I’ve coughed every morning for 2 years- I think it’s dust or air pollution; it’s always gone by mid afternoon.

I used to get sore throats all the time. Then I was diagnosed with coeliac disease, I stopped eating gluten and the sore throats went away- basically my immune system was weak and fighting on too many fronts. Yours might be too- maybe ask the GP to check for immune diseases.

Drink water before bed and whenever you wake in the night too.

LastChristmas19 · 17/12/2020 10:16

Thankfully not @CoffeeandChocolateplease! I’ve only had to do a couple of them.

Interesting about the dairy products. I’ve actually eaten more than usual dairy the last few days and woke up with a scratchy throat!

I just cannot pinpoint the exact cause or whether it’s a mix of things. I remember even a teen everything seemed to affect my throat.

I’m known to get a niggly throat when I’ve not had much sleep either.

I must look like the right picture of health here 😉

Hi all, health anxiety sufferer here and also TMJ . Does anyone get aches at either side close to throat?? It's like an ache, throb at either side so it's not a typical sore throat.... due to my anxiety I'm imaging the worst and so upset/crying. Really praying it's just part of Tmj
